I don't really know if humanity benefits. Sure, he's making a good rocket, but it's still private information. It's not like NASA where all the shit they developed ended up in our hands.

the great thing about capitalism is it encourages movers, shakers and innovators like elon musk to waste resources and manpower that probably ultimately belong to other people to fulfill personal whims that are only superficially inventive and impractical and don't give back to humanity in any tangible way

it encourages innovation so much it lead elon to take credit for things nasa could've done 20 years ago had it not been perpetually underfunded ever since the '70s, and that's ignoring the far bigger picture of coporations in general wasting fucktons of resources because that's somehow more profitable to them

it's just that efficient

I feel like there's some common misconceptions here... probably the biggest is that this isn't the beginning of the privatization of space-- before Falcon Heavy, the most powerful rocket in the world still in use was the Delta IV Heavy, developed by the Boeing Company and operated today by the United Launch Alliance, both private companies. (Early Delta rockets were government-designed but the Delta IV has basically nothing in common with them)

Also, it's not uncommon for companies to launch dummy payloads on the first launch of a new rocket; they're very failure-prone, NASA would never launch a scientific payload on the first launch-- those things are way more expensive than a Tesla Roadster. (In fact, SpaceX has an air force launch lined up specifically on the requirement that the Falcon Heavy have one success beforehand; that's probably a common clause in their launch contracts)

In the end, it's cool in the sense of "haha he put a car in space", but it doesn't really change the "big picture" of aerospace as much as people seem to like to say.

I really wish it was the weekend already. :/ This week has been rough, and it's only been two days.

Me as well. It has been quite a tough couple days for me, with no idea why or how it's happening in the first place.

I really wish we would move to four tens intstead of five eights. Or even better, maybe two eights, with a living wage built in. Or maybe just full socialism, that sounds nice.

(sigh)

thinking about getting a Greek yoghurt maker and just making my own Greek yoghurt instead of buying it from the store. my calculations show i would save a significant amount of money even with the 20 or so minutes it takes to do this every week.

I would love to start getting into four tens, but the way our daily production works, I don't think I could fill those extra two hours considering how busy it is.

I don't know, but lately I've been unusually cold and I'm not sure why. Even when the heater's on, I get unusually cold, and this is from being indoors. Oh well, at least Winter's almost over.
