Have recently started watching "Altered Carbon" on Netflix, and I'm wondering who else is (no spoilers, please!)

The general premise is that we (generally) no longer die. Our selves are encoded in a little puck-shaped thingy in our spines, called a "stack" and we can switch bodies ("sleeves") when they are damaged. There is real death -- when a stack is destroyed -- but generally people can, in theory, choose to live forever… if they can afford to pay for the sleeve/cloning services/etc.

Of course, this is all not distributed evenly, and not everyone wants to switch sleeves. There are themes of inequality, as well as what happens to the soul. The rich live for hundreds of years and are abusive and exploitative and everything is very ultra-capitalist and nasty. There's all this tech that could benefit humanity, but mostly only the rich have access to it, and they're not interested in helping humanity at all.

It's very cyberpunk and very violent and I'm enjoying it so far.

I watched the whole thing through recently.

Though I enjoyed it, I found the ridiculous amount tits and torture porn a bit gratiutous (I'm not one for it at all) which took away from the interesting sci-fi parts of it.

I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't call it a great.

I agree that it is a little over the top with that stuff, and I have to wonder if the book is the same, or if it's like GoT where extra violence (especially sexual violence) is added to make it more exciting.

I thought the carelessness of the torture porn and violence fit the universe (especially in the later episodes), but yeah, some of it was excessive and edgy for the sake of it.

I totally enjoyed it though, even if it was rather trope-y and predictable near the end of the series.

Yeah, it really had to tick off a whole bunch of cyberpunk tropes right at the end, doesn't it?

The violence… is mostly in service of the story, but also… kind of over the top. I mean, to a large extent it makes sense that things are like that because human life is so extremely devalued once death loses some of its meaning. They're also clearly going for a much more action vibe than a thinky vibe.

Still, I would generally prefer fewer images of dead women… if we had to have all of that it'd be nice if they'd also shown more ways that society devalued men's lives as well.

Character codes for UTF-8 must be in the range: U+0000 to U+10FFFF.
The definition of UTF-8 in Annex D of ISO/IEC 10646-1:2000 also
allows for the use of five- and six-byte sequences to encode
characters that are outside the range of the Unicode character set;
those five- and six-byte sequences are illegal for the use of
UTF-8 as a transformation of Unicode characters. ISO/IEC 10646
does not allow mapping of unpaired surrogates, nor U+FFFE and U+FFFF
(but it does allow other noncharacters). For more information please refer to
http://www.unicode.org/ and http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/unicode.html

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
