I've always thought it was kind of weird that I tend to mentally count in my head in a lot of situations:

- when listening to music (1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4... sometimes fun when it's not a 4/4 song)
- going up or down stairs; I actually know by heart how many are in the common ones (19 at home, 24 at work)
- when doing something that takes small amounts of time, counting down time units (not seconds)

I'm kind of weird, I guess

I do the 4/4 thing when I'm patting the baby. Sometimes it's 1, 2, 3, 4, and sometimes it's "fluffy bunnies".

I count backwards from 1000 when I'm having trouble sleeping. I usually forget where I am around 700.

EDIT: If I'm doing a breathing meditation thingy, I'll count to 10 (say, 1 on the in breath, 2 on the out breath) over and over.

I actually like counting the music notes a lot, and moreso when it's a song that's not standard. Like Plok's bonus level theme is 5/4 for the intro part (uh) and then transitions to 4/4; then you have an extra Undertale boss that goes from 4/4 to 3/4 ...

Please tell me you listen to Tool…

(Listen to "Schism", I'm told it changes meter 47 times…)

I don't, because I have very questionable tastes in music.

i like to count when listening to waltzes

ONE two three ONE two three ONE two three ONE two three

also yes tool is nice, though i generally only keep the beat rather than count (because that's all you really need when you play along with it)

though, frickin heck, the intro the The Pot is just impossible for me to discern the rhythm to before 'rob the grave'

in a similar vein, young me memorozed the percussion intro measure to Casino Night Zone at a different tempo to the rest of the song. didn't even realize it was just a normal measure until a couple years ago.

I don't think I even try to keep the beat with Tool, it's just nutty. Like, who even 11/8 ??

I don't know why anybody would 11/8 when 7/11 is a lot more convenient.

to be fair, pre-Lateralus tool's pretty straightforward.. but yeah, stuff like Vicarious, Lateralus, Schism, etc. can be a pain in the butt (funnily enough, guess what three tool songs are in Guitar Hero World Tour? aka the GH game i played the most)

waltzes make me count the most

sometimes i’ll count tiles in groups of 3

sometimes i’ll see numbers and add them up in my head

as for music time sigs, 11/8 isn’t that weird—it can break down in a number of ways like 4/8 + 4/8 + 3/8.

Tool's great for getting used to changing time signatures rapidly. Rosetta Stoned changes time signatures pretty much every other bar at some points.

non-VGM example that I like: "Just the Same" by Gentle Giant having the rhythm section and the rest of the band playing/singing in 6/4 and 7/4 simultaneously

(I'm definitely pretty sure I've talked about both of these before)

I used to count to sleep when I was into the lucid sleeping thing. Yeah. That's another topic though.

In the past I might have been counting in hex sometimes.

Generally I won't find myself spontaneously counting these days. I'll probably be thinking of a song. Or just... thinking.

I think the only thing I count is music, and then only if the time signature catches my attention.

Since we're posting music with unusual time signatures, here have one from me.

I usually count 1-2-3-4 when tapping rhythmically and the like, but not to music.

Otherwise not really counting, but weird rhythmical things I do sometimes:

-Streets here are tiled, rather than concrete or whatever, and quite often I tend to make periodic patterns of specific feet on specific parts or tiles. Usually involving placing my heels on the grooves where three tiles meet.

-When riding in a car: blinking every n reflective stripes , or blinking in between passing lanterns.

I count all of the time when the situation calls for it. Like when waiting for a traffic light to turn or rarely when I try to sleep but can't.
