Yeah, it's not a huge issue, but I found it interesting. I tend to doubt companies have any good reasons to be doing things like this. As I understand it they were earlier found to be crippling their apps on AMD systems to make Intel look good...

I started skype.exe with Sysinternals filemon.exe running.
There is no 1.com file generated or executed by Skype on my machine.
Are you sure your skype.exe image has not been compromised by a virus?
Perhaps you should try to confirm your finding after reinstalling Skype?

And what is this nonsense about “their track record”?

While it's a bit odd they're doing that, I get the picture it's either fake or silly... if it's really used for evil, the guy who runs GRC.com will probably have a field day with it.

Well, I like to know when a company whose products I may/do use is doing something fishy, even if they did it last year. If they did sneaky things before they're liable to do sneaky things again. Sony is a great example of this. It's the same reason things like criminal records and background checks exist.
