Y-m-d is the superior option simply because it sorts properly, whereas everything else is comically screwed up in one way or another. It also puts the most significant part first.

Other options are like saying one million is now written as 000,000,1

imo the difference in order shows us how different languages/cultures encode date endianness, which is semantically distinct from number endianness.

like honestly Xk you’re thinking about comp sci when you talk about sorting, but the fact is 3.6 billion people use a little-endian date format whereas less than half of that use big-endian.

I've only really seen the YMD format in use for files spewn out by a certain backup utility, which yes it does make it very easy to lazily programmatically sort files by date as I experienced it

I'm not willing to train my brain to departure from the standard for anything else though.

The most annoying thing is, when peaple separet the digits with /, but use d/m/y instead of m/d/y. As I'm accustomed to d.m.y. That's why I started appreciating dates after the 12th of the month. Then I'm mostly sure which date was meant.

Or if companies forget for international releases to correct the annotation. It is really annoying when stupid people ask again and again why the game wasn't out on 9/5 because it meant September 5th and not 9th May.

for something like a date format, i think that endianness is ultimately kind of arbitrary. honestly, i even think number endianness is ultimately arbitrary... if there's some culture out there that ended up with 000,000,1 instead of the inverse that'd be, like, weird compared to what i'm used to but not necessarily wrong for any real reason, there's still a logic to it that could be intuitive to most people if that were just the standard, and it has all the same advantages of big-endian

i guess if i examine my motivations more closely (rather than just saying Y-m-d is "logically ordered"), yeah, i like Y-m-d because i name a lot of files with dates in them, and Y-m-d just naturally sorts chronologically if you sort a folder by name.

i think sorting by some kind of significance is probably a good idea because that's intuitive to most people and avoids ambiguity. but honestly, for home/personal use, i'm a big proponent of people using whatever they like and feels intuitive/natural to them.

also i didn't know Canada used Y-m-d! that's cool and i think that knowledge might be useful if i ever do wanna switch to using Y-m-d everywhere

I could easily live with Y-m-d as well, I just hate month first.

As for sorting, I need to rename some files since they are in d-m-Y form currently. Don't know why I didn't pick up that earlier.

Because of the confusion between day and month, I always try to spell out the month instead of just express it with numbers, and put all four digits for the year... though in the end yeah, I still do "Day, Month DD, YYYY" (ex: Sunday, January 28, 2018) because that's the format that's expected of people in schools over here. I remember being handed an 'official English grammar guide' when I was a kid...

Weirdly, it kinda varies with language? Like, when I used to write the date in French I went with "DD Month YYYY" instead (ie., "28 Janvier 2018")...

It does. In Portuguese: 28 de Janeiro de 2018.

Which would literally mean "28 of January of 2018", but it becomes "January 28th, 2018". I guess one could use "28th of January of 2018" or "28 of January, 2018" as well? But weirdly, it still sounds awkward in English. I guess there isn't an easy solution to this.
