Unfortunately, Mycroft still uses cloud speech recognition, afaik. They've claimed they're going for full open source and will eventually not rely on uploading your audio to some random place on the internet, but their OpenSTT repo has been empty for 2 years now.

Edit: My bad, it sounds like the idea is to eventually move from sending data to Google, to sending data to them, but to open source whatever they run. So, still uploading audio, but at least it's not to Google; I'm not sure I care about that distinction, personally.

I'm not sure I'm all that keen on the idea, but he reckons that little kids instantly "get" voice command stuff, so it'll be good for the kid when he's talking and stuff.

Reminds me that I still need to painstakingly go through every single website I use, occassionally or otherwise, and set up my allowed/blocked settings for both NoScript and Adblock.

One of the downsides to a new laptop, particularly when you haven't brought in the old one for monitor repair yet and doing anything on it takes effort.

I honestly don't think this deadicated voice assistant thing will catch on.

The convenience of it is underwhelming, and definitely wouldn't justify the price.

honestly,

some of us don’t want to talk, much less talk to some robot assistant.

i can see how it’s “useful” to some ppl, but i’d probably not get one.

i hate the notifications prompt tho, worst part.
