Yeah, unfortunately I likely have to deal with this for the remainder of the school year.

I really should have kept that other cable.

Yeah, that's extremely rude. I didn't know any of that, except for the book. It's somewhat impossible to not notice the book on Twitter.

pardon my french, but pretty fucked, b/c i think about how much forums helped me all the time.

but i guess that’s how it goes. sometimes, for some ppl, all that matters is the tangible rewards.

the book any good?

tbf, perhaps she had something else really negative happen spinning off from the forums that she associates w/ it but isn’t directly related to us. i would hope it’s not just to dismiss us entirely.

I actually started to feel pretty bad about this, because I couldn't find the post in question, but then I did:

Sorry, but I've never won anything from posting on a message board. Nor have I found a website to write for about video games from a message board.

To me, Twitter is far more superior and better than any message board.

This was from a discussion about Twitter 7 years ago, around the time it was starting to really take off.

I guess my memory wasn't all that wrong, after all.

Well, I guess I did get a job offer based on Twitter, but I got the shitty skillset that led to the job offer from message boards…

Forum-based roleplaying basically cultivated most of my writing skills and a significant part of my current ongoing group of friends. One forum in particular was directly responsible for keeping me sane (as mad as it drove me many times) and introducing me to a bunch of really awesome people who became close friends of mine, one of whom introduced me to Jul. Another of my friends from that forum introduced me to another forum, where it turns out there are also several people from Jul in some parts of it.

The whole six degrees of separation thing is really more like three degrees of separation in the hyper-connected era.

honestly, if it weren’t for message boards, i wouldn’t have gotten a roommate (Nicole, who also got to experience an awful controlling self-absorbed roommate who left before the lease was even up, rip 22-year-old me) or a place to live in Seattle for a month (Adelheid).

i’ve gotten many other things, but imo the most important thing i got was friendship which has lasted a lifetime. i think some of my oldest friends are from this forum.

It's far nicer being able to read a forum and get an idea of a community than to look at a feed and get a swath of unending, mostly meaningless sharing. It's an indescribable difference that's only really come around with the rise of social media, because at no point in history did anyone consider it a good idea to put all the pointless parts of their thoughts in with everyone else's in a blender.

yeah, i reallllly don't care for the dismissiveness of forums... i ended up meeting my first ex directly through this very forum, and while we're not together anymore it was still a really important experience for me and i learned so, so much from it. my current girlfriend and most of my roommates i met indirectly through intermingling between different people from different forums, i ended up moving out of my parents' house and living in Denver indirectly because of forums... my longest-lasting friendship with anyone ever (w/ Bloodstar, still goin on strong for like, 13+ years now or something. what the heck) was someone i met on a forum, and while we waver on and off in how often we talk to each other, i still really value that and i value a lot of the other close, long-time friends i've made.

i was a socially isolated and sheltered thing growing up, owing partly to some personal stuff and partly to the fact that i was homeschooled and my family moved around a lot; forums and the people i met through them filled in a void that i really desperately needed.

i'm not doubting that social media can be important for people -- it has its own benefits and its own opportunities, and i'm sure a lot of younger people are meeting and making longtime friendships through social media the same way my generation kinda did with forums... i wouldn't even want to compare one to the other favorably or unfavorably insofar regarding their importance to people, at least; they're just ways for people to socialize. (i'd compare the good/bad between the formats, but that's a completely different conversation for a different topic...) i just tend to think every generation of people has different ways they've socialized and human interaction and connection is at the root of it all, really, and that it's kind of disheartening to see someone being so dismissive...

i'm sure to Anya that was just a silly sorta like, "competitive" throwaway comment she made, though. i'd rather not like, make her feel like she's being dogpiled for something she ultimately probably didn't mean... doesn't mean it wasn't kind of a cold thing to say, though.

While trying to get a language tutoring work-study job I somehow landed a web dev interview for work study at my college. This was in the middle of my language-learning college years, so I hadn't done much coding in years and the only thing I had to show off my web dev skills back then was a modified version of AcmlmBoard I had made that had a ton of features for learning Chinese that I was using at the time.... I got the job and the experience of having that job for 3 years is probably partly why I have a web dev job now...

I've also made a lot of friends here. Far more than anything Facebook / Twitter or other social media have done.

i just noticed how kinda good the anchor ids (the lil #word things at the end of a URL that links to a section within a page) in the FAQ are

i'm particularly fond of #halp and the fact that the donation question is #frosteddonut (???)

e: donut = donat(ion). dammit

I forgot about those, damn.

I still manually write them for my tilde town page, but I don't really update that any more (and they're usually just one or two words based on the title, anyway).
