A recent (within the last 2 years) update to Skype added a very easy export-to-html feature so you don't have to parse its proprietary log format anymore! It's worth logging in one last time to convert your archive, I think.

I wish Discord allowed exporting logs so I could finally leave all these dead group chats and servers :/ I've already lost things from having other people delete servers we used before group chats were options…

I'd never thought of even doing such a thing as saving all your chat logs.

To contribute to the discussion: I mostly don't care about old data, except when it comes to programming. I decided I didn't want to see all my old programming projects anymore so I just decided to upload them to the cloud, where I bet a lot of peoples' useless data goes.

I have two backups of old laptops, going as far back as 2004 apparently. One of the laptops was still working, too.

Anything older is lost, be it from my very first laptop or the old shared family computer. Latter was modified, upgraded, and started fresh, and given to my sister for a while. Former seemed to be gone, which wouldn't be surprising given mom's tendency to throw away anything that is not immediately useful and/or dirty

I want to keep everything, but I keep inadvertently destroying data and/or can't afford a proper backup system ;-;

I have a USB stick that more or less died, and just now I got the thing to be read again so I copied everything off. I had to push it one way, so I think it's just one of the solder joints has broken

I now have a little bit of stuff from 2012 as well, and I tried drawing digitally back then already. All but 2 things are from a Minecraft texture pack (there are some worlds as well), but still. The rest is related to school from the time.

I still have everything from my 2nd Desktop PC from 2006 onwards. (Currently on my 3rd Desktop PC) with some old files lingering around from before, incl. my previous post layouts (SBB and Pokémon and Wario's Woods).

I really should backup my backup CDs, as those are slowly succumbing to bit rot because of age.

Wow, just browsing trough my pictures folder sorted by date. Almost all my old desktop backgrounds are still here... rocking resolutions of 1280 x 1024 back in 2001.

haven't really had anything to back up, since before maybe 2014 I didn't really have any data to back up since I didn't use computers much.

though nowadays I keep everything on my harddrive, and back up more important stuff to my external, just hoping these drives don't ever go kaput.

if I ever do a hardware upgrade I'd probably just end up making an image of my entire drive and moving stuff over, heheh... there's way too much stuff on here that's important to me

Man, I wish I still had my backup DVD from like 2007. Unfortunately I had to chuck it as it was beyond salvation, even with toothpaste.

Strangely enough, I haven't had any CD/DVD fail yet (with the exception of some I received from my cousin, but they were already broken before).

At least most of the stuff in DVDs is just copies of other backed up files.

What I did get failing however, was one of the few floppy disks I have. Which put one of the floppy drives out of alignment and as such it doesn't work anymore.

I kept a lot of things from the past. Before using git and other code management systems I often made snapshot backups of things. Whenever I retired a machine I'd make a disk image from it as well.

I have no idea if any of it is still working as most of it is on CD/DVD-Rs in my attic. I've only had to recover stuff from my RO days. (I have so many chat logs you could fill a year of just reading those things.)

I'm big on preservation of data. Lots of history is lost if you don't take steps to keep it around.

I found the only remaining screenshots from my mid-2000s MMO days on Photobucket. That site is such a garbage fire now--gross ads everywhere, and you can't even link files anymore without paying an unreasonable fee.

I have fond memories from playing Ragnarok Online on the XeRO private server. It's a shame my only screenshot was to report a foul-mouthed spammer:

ROSE Online was very forgettable, aside from a cool glitch that caused you to run insanely fast after standing up. You could clip up mountains or even into the void using this glitch:

I think the oldest backups I've made were from my HP laptop in... 2010? 2011? I think? Sometime around then. I haven't been great at keeping backups - mostly because the external backup drive is no longer big enough to host my honkin' 1TB big D: drive that's constantly almost full. T_T

But yeah, I'm trying to get better at archiving things but I can never get the space needed. Sigh.

Well, is the 1TB drive actually full of stuff that needs backing up?

Eh, some of it, but I recently reorganized the entire D: drive and going through all the stuff I wanna keep now would take a while. I think even if I did decide what to keep and not keep, it would still be too much for the poor external. I dunno. We'll see, I suppose.

Let's have a good time together!

After going a little trough my stuff, I found some more old things in RAR-files layoung around.

Stuff I thought I had lost! Like my old Fanfiction *cringe* and many old Flash animations I did.

Yeah ROSE never went anywhere. Gravity's first attempt at a 3d MMO. I don't even know if any good private server projects happened with it. Was it any fun or did it have that Gravity "feel"? (from the screenshot yes lol)

ROSE was decent at first, but then became a grindfest like most free-to-play MMOs of that time. Thinking back on it, that game also had a duping exploit which made everything abnormally expensive in the player-run shops. I gave up on the game when I couldn't afford gear for progression.

Didn't they also try at least one or two different "RO 2"s before giving up on that?

Actually, what even is Gravity up to these days?

They had two version of RO2. The first one was deemed "Too different" So they took the engine and made one closer to RO1. It wasn't doing too well. It did so bad that there isn't even a kRO2 anymore. (having just iRO2 would have been blasphemy back in the old days.) They got partially bought out/hired a western company to run the stuff. It's doing better, but nothing like RO1 back in the day.

I wonder how much of that is just due to the apparent saturation of freemium MMO games, especially compared with the new trend of awful gacha shit.
