Somewhat old wintery layout!
----------------------------------------------------

So... I was watching the news today... 99% of the commercials during the 1 hour broadcast (that's ~40 commercials) were about some sort of medicine or drug. (That was ~38/39 of the commercials... believe me, I counted)

I find it strange that I just noticed this... does anyone have any explanations for this, or am I just imagining things?

And really, does this represent the society that the US (and possibly most of the urban world) is evolving into? This whole "something is wrong, lets cure it with a pill!" mentality.

O-K then...
...wow.
Just...wow.
19 out of every 20 commercials trying to sell you a miracle pill that will take away your problems, is that right?

Probably trying to keep people from rebelling from poor conditions by giving them something that they're supposed to take for fixing poor sleeping conditions and the like, when it really just supresses any anti-governmental thoughts they have.
Or something like that, at least.

Or maybe it's just drug companies trying to increase their profit margins- I don't think we need to worry about a conspiracy to drug the populace (at least, not yet...)

Also fun are the ones where the warning labels are longer than the advertisement section...

"Take Drugbrandia for all your medical needs. *stock clip of people running in a field* Ask your doctor before taking Drugbrandia. May cause headache, stroke, mental illness, hives, rashes, and spontaneous combustion. In some cases Drugbrandia when taken with immunosuppressants has been known to cause death or other serious more side effects, talk to your doctor. Do not take Drugbrandia if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, are capable of becoming pregnant, or are not capable of becoming pregnant. In fact, to be safe, don't take it if you plan to be near people below the age of ten. Do not give Drugbrandia to minors or senior citizens..."

There was on last night...the ad was about 10 minutes long....8 minutes worth of side effects. Everyone was laughing at it.

I don't know why I put this here.
They tend to cluster around the news, which apparently is watched by people with enough problems to fill three textbooks. It's obviously to get people who don't need the drug to take it, become addicted, and become a part of their profits.

Wow. I never realized that medicine commercials are aired that much during the news . I got to pay attention to that the next time I watch the news.

I used to have a funny image called "Side effects may include" that had a bunch of graphical depictions of tons of stupid sideffects.

I wish I knew where it was.

There's something wrong when cures for diseases become less important than anything else the drug companies are doing...

It's kind of scary, knowing that when someone actually needs medicine, nobody cares enough to make it.

Here they don't seem to be able to advertise in the same way. We get a couple of advertisements for over-the-counter treatments, such as Panadol (paracetamol / acetaminophen) and other mild pain relievers, some antacids, and multi-vitamins.

They don't advertise a whole lot else. I understand that in the United States they are permitted to advertise anti-depressant medication for example, but I've never seen an advert for one in Australia.

Lactation <- Rather wtf?

I really like the commercials that have side effects that could make the condition you're taking the pill for worse.

I had an interesting commercial experience with Spike yesterday. My younger sisters, my cousin, and I were watching 007 on spike. No we all know Spike has dfsdfsadf long commercials.

Well, we happened to hit upon a block of 'male enhancement' leading into 'birth control' then some old people drug.

Reminds me of how Shopper's Drug Mart has condoms in the "family planning" aisle.

The two most common imaginary illnesses: Depression, AD(H)D.

Too much serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain? Let's administer an antidepressant! Zoloft! Prozac! Paxil! Problem identified, problem solved! Wait a sec... Think maybe the neurotransmitters aren't the cause, but a symptom? Being sad usually leads to depression. I know, I know: can't say that because it isn't treated with a drug.

And then there's kids with short attention spans and lots of energy. Does that mean what I think it does? Recent studies show that children under the age of 21 all have attention disorders! Human nature is now an illness.
