I don't understand how people get away with it. Everything just constantly gets worse and it takes a ton of effort to make it get better again.

Cleaning my working space and room (and other parts of the place, I guess) every once in a while actually fulfills me and give me that nice feeling of getting something done. I can't ride the wave for long though.

The problem is once it gets bad enough (or really, once it just gets bad in general it feels a lot like it's impossible to make progress with; there's just so much. And if you fall behind on upkeep, it rapidly gets bad again.

Just put everything away/throw it away/whatever when you're done with it. Set your pots to soak after you serve and before you eat, wash all the dishes after you eat off them… Open a new toy? Great! Put the package in the recycling before you turn it on or look at the manual or whatever. When you take off your clothes, put them in the hamper instead of the floor, and when it's full, wash stuff (sorting is for chumps, by which I mean you can just take the delicates out when you're loading the washer, don't need a separate hamper for them). Takes almost no effort and keeps your space from being cluttered.

This feels like my life at the moment, although it's compounded by the baby, really. I feel like I spend all of his naps just trying to catch up, so when he's awake we're not stumbling over problems (like a messy high chair from the last feed… that I need to clean before I feed him again).

This is pretty much what I try to do, but it has fallen apart somewhat now we have the little one. Part of that is that it's not always possible to give something attention right away… babies have zero patience whatsoever. If he needs something now, you drop whatever you're doing immediately and come back to it whenever you can…

House is currently pretty good btw. I just need to put away a bunch of laundry, unload the dishwasher, wipe down the chopping board I used this morning, and make more cold brew coffee. But first I want to drink this coffee…

My problem is "almost no effort" is still greater than "no effort", especially when I come home and immediately become one with my bed for several hours (on occasion taking unintentional micro-naps).

Our rats are pretty clean! We made sure to get removable litter trays for all the horizontal surfaces in their cage, with extra high walls on the main levels so they don't kick too much bedding out. We can easily vacuum it up every couple days. And when we do a full cleaning for their cage we just let them run around and play, it's fun for everyone.



(I know what you meant, I'm just saying rats are cute and good and nice :p )

I suppose one thing that helps me is having a certain threshold or a set date to clean, no matter how you feel on that day. The moment I see a layer of dust beneath my bed is the moment I bust out the vaccuum and clean. It's actually less straining to reserve an hour or half to clean up a smaller mess rather than taking the whole day off to clean one big mess.

once i got the person who didn't do her share of cleaning to move out, my place got 99× tidier. i have an all-white apartment w/ all-white surfaces and basically nothing is ever left out. and sometimes when i have free time, i’ll tidy the place up. it seems fine as long as you keep on top of it.

I'm absolutely terrible at cleaning. I started dusting my room a few weekends ago, and I still haven't finished. It's getting embarrassingly bad. I don't know why I don't do it more often; it feels nice to have something clean, and once I clean the room once, it's just small, consistent efforts to make it not a shit-tip again. Oh well, I blame work for tiring me out. Completely not my own laziness at all.

That's the biggest problem, sofi. If you have basically no energy, you can manage to keep something clean as long as it doesn't get any worse than "barely". As soon as it does it's too difficult to get back to that spot and it just gets worse from there.

Kind of like shaving, if you don't do it every day or every other day it quickly becomes unmanageable and requires a full-on beard trimmer (unless you want a lot of pain )

I try to take a day of the week to clean up accumulated clutter. My day is usually around Thursday- Saturday, and I find sticking to it really helps. Making a list/prioritizing things helps too. For example, my lists are like this:

every day:
- do dishes
- shovel snow
- pick up clutter

weekly:
- wash my sheets/clothes
- vacuum my floor
- dust my desk
- organize at least one shelf

Just felt like sharing what I know best. It's hard when you have little energy, but preparing in advance can help motivate one's will to clean.

yeah, this is good advice. i find a lot of my energy goes into worrying about cleaning rather than just cleaning and getting organized helps a lot.

People have different tolerance level for how clean a place should be too. I certainly would want things to be a bit cleaner than it is most of the time here, but it's also not something that I feel I can't live with. When it gets really bad I decide to clean it up to a good level again though, even if it might take a while to get the energy mustered up to do that. And even then it's still just a single section I clean at once, like, say, maybe the desk, or vacuum the floor, or the toilet, etc. <.<

When I lived with my dad my step mother would at times just randomly decide to vacuum my room and it kinda bothered me on some level. Because I don't think that's something she should have to do, and it wasn't yet at a level that bothered me. Kinda why I prefer living on my own, since I can be comfy just having things on an acceptable level without anyone else judging me or being bothered.

Oh yeah, it sucks when you live with someone whose cleanliness tolerance is very different to yours. My husband would happily live with the kitchen counters piled high with leftovers and dishes, the floors covered in laundry, food packets and stuff everywhere…

…I get stressed if the place gets too messy. In fact, I should be cleaning right now.

I also have a bit of a routine for things, with reminders set for some tasks that need to be done periodically. Like, every few months I'll get a ping reminding me it's time to properly scrub down the shower (as opposed to just squeegeeing it when we are done). Or one to empty out the lint trap on the washing machine, or give the dishwasher a deep clean, or clean the grease trap on the range hood, or… yeah… all those fun things. The things that you don't need to do every day, or even every month necessarily, but if you don't do them regularly enough OH BOY
