I don't have much to say about it because most of what I want to say is in the journal. I've been trying to write in it fairly often, as opposed to my old site, because it's just easier to do. The old site is raw HTML and CSS, which isn't bad, but updating it means writing it, previewing it, committing, pushing, pulling... posting in the journal is just writing and hitting a button, and it lets me interact with people in a nice way.

Have you done anything like this? I know for a while LiveJournal was a thing, but that fell out of favor over 11 years ago and Russia took it over (long story). Then there were some of us who were on DeadJournal, or Xanga, or whatever else.

i started keeping a daily journal in the form of a Word document. it’s handy and helps me remember things. i’ll probably not share it, but it’s useful and i sort of wish i journaled my entire life.

Private journals are really useful too, and one nice thing is that most journal sites have a way to set privacy levels per post, including "only myself". Obviously you're still trusting your host to not be evil, but hey

I actually found some old LJ entries I wrote well over 14 years ago and I think my sentiment is quite different from yours. My old entries are ... yikes

I've been keeping a personal diary since 2008 (that's 14 yrs old). Though for the first years it was more of a dream journal, because I was really into dreams then. There are some interesting thoughts beyond 2011 and some downtime. In the past years I've just been writing entries that are records of actual things that happened (i.e. trips I've done), and endless thoughts I don't want to pour on anybody else.

I've considered doing the whole thing public. The things I write about are largely truly private stuff, though, and concerning other people who I would not like to publicly drop a wealth of info on. The closest has been ttbp on tilde.town, an internal blogging service. But even there I wrote in a different style from my diary, after all, people need at least a little context, and it needs to be readable. In my diary I half-ass sentences, switch between czech and english at will, leave posts unfinished etc.

I kept a handwritten bullet journal all through my pregnancy, but I haven't had very many chances to update it since. Now the boy is starting to have longer naps in the morning, I might be able to get back to it…

…my first entry is going to have to be about the 6 month gap though.

I actually wrote a new entry based on what I found for another thread.

It's nice having a place to put thoughts that isn't Twitter...

I kept a dream journal at one point a few years ago. Here are some highlights:

"On the top of a very large and very tall barge with Eminem. He tells me to never give up. I'm way too scared to get down and it's snowing."

"I got a sub from Subway, but they replaced the cheese and meat with napkins. I was mad and people couldn't see what the problem was."

"Windows 10 makes you fall through the floor if you pirate it. A streamer was playing a Castlevania game where you had to find giant cookies that were chests that had to be opened with milk."

"I get some early copy of Doom that only works if you install a special fuse in your power box. It also requires you to play in god mode. Someone was trying to play it using tortilla bread as a controller. Later, I had to label some products for a company and they came totally unmarked. I fucked this up completely."

"I have three monitors and they keep getting in each other's way. I try to upgrade to Windows 10, but I accidentally upgrade to Windows 5 instead."

"WWE honours the memory of Chris Benoit in my neighbour's driveway. 'He may have killed his family, and he may have cut off his own head, but he is still a legend.'"

"Was on the production team for a Hearthstone LAN tournament. One of the players was a 3 year old crocodile."

Ah man. I used to have a dream journal too, but I think it's truly gone; I haven't found it anywhere, at least.

I've started one, but I'll not link it until there's actually something worthwhile in it.

I started a dream journal in a (physical) notepad sometime in the last few years, but then almost immediately forgot about it. I don't remember my dreams well at all.

I'm in the same boat, which is kind of annoying. Whenever I do have a dream that's vivid enough to remember, I always forget all the interesting details by the time I'm lucid enough to write it down or do anything else. Most of the time I wake up not even remembering having dreamed about anything to begin with.

I could probably benefit from keeping a general life journal just to keep myself away from the sense of inertia that I tend to find myself in, but I don't think I'd be too good about actually keeping it up for very long.

that’s a good thing, isn’t it? the important thing is you get to see yourself evolve.

Maybe, but I don't need to look at that to know that I'm better now. The old stuff is just cringe-inducing.

I feel the same way about my old posts from the original Acmlm's Board (I2 anyway, I can't find any remnants of I1). It's super cringe today, but also serves as a nice reminder of how far I came, though.

Back on topic, I actually used to keep an offline journal when I was college to process some personal things, and still know many people who keep one today. It still baffles me how therapeutic it can be.

You know what, here it is anyway. Most recent was explaining a worldbuilding idea. There a couple of more personal entries earlier and who knows what there will be added in the future.

I used to keep a journal on LiveJournal as well, from early 2006 to early 2013, abandoning it - ironically enough - for Twitter. It's gone from LJ itself, in part because Russia, tho I did export it to Dreamwidth for some reason... it's kinda embarrassing in parts (i.e. why I won't like to it here, tho it's not hard to find if you know my nicknames), so I don't know why I didn't just let it disappear - probably because I still have some attachment to it in me somewhere...?

The closest I ever did was an attempt made years ago at a dreams journal by actually drawing the dreams.
It didn't get very far, but I'm pretty sure I still have it somewhere (I don't throw away art).

Anyway, I never really had a real journal - I just don't feel comfortable in writing one.

What I did think various times was about writing something more along the lines of ToastyTech's opinions page... but that's a story for another time.

I was writing something and figured they were thoughts I'd like to share with more people, so in order to not repeat myself, I wrote a Dreamjournal post. Feel free to read it.

I wonder if it's Twitter's fault that I'm not really doing much in terms of "long-form writing" anymore, if that's even an appropriate term to use for my blogging and such.

I could continue using said migrated former-LJ-journal, but considering that, even when I see a thread on here where I think "oh, I could reply to this with X or Y", I often just don't write anything... I dunno. I dunno if Twitter is even what's to "blame" here, or if it's just a general change in interest or whatever...?

...bah, I want some of my 10, 15 years younger self back, who'd just blog and post about whatever the hell. Not all of him, just a bit.
