Small shop, 2 php 2 c# and like 5 other staff. I've been 24/7 on-call for the last 4+ years and it's never really going to change.

Job hunting is dead because there's nothing in this town, and I'm basically dysfunctional now any way.

Ah. Yeah, I'm afraid of the same when I return to work once I don't need to be a full-time mum any more. Employment in this city is pretty bad, and I know I have huge skillset rot from my job (plus this career hiatus) and bad work habits (although I guess every workplace trains you to be a particular kind of dysfunctional).

There are two options in that situation I guess? Moving to another town is one, or pivoting to a different career?

For me, moving is not an option I'm willing to consider, at least for the moment. But I am considering a pivot… perhaps doing a Bachelor of Creative Arts and getting into art for games/movies/animation? I am not sure. It seems a little like a real option and a little like a crazy dream.

I really want to move out of this place; I just can't. :/ I'm tired of doing programming work but I don't have too much money saved and I don't really know what to do.

Yeah, these things are definitely not easy, and most big life changes seem to have costs attached. Then there's the general sense of unsureness about how to… even… do these big things.

With the art study thing, a lot of why it feels like a crazy dream is all tied up in either money or anxiety. I don't know if I can afford the course. I don't know if I can get into the course. I don't know what I need to do to get into the course. I don't know if I can even overcome my anxieties to look into it properly. I'm afraid of failure.

Everyone is. But hey, if you fail, at least you gave it a shot. More than most people can say.

Yeeep.

I don't mind where I am very much (hell, to an extent I even like it), but aside from brief trips out of state for something or other (shopping, visiting an aunt who lived just across the border, trips in high school) I haven't really left this state, let alone this little part of the state since 2005. (2007/2008 if you want to count high school trips to NYC/DC, but eh, I dunno how much those really count given their short duration)

I want to go somewhere sometime, but I can't afford it. I've not even taken any vacation time because I'd like to actually use it for something when I finally do, but if I just sit at home that's just money I'm losing since it'll get paid out to me if it's unused

ahhh

Yeahhhh… it really dictates what you can and can't make of your life. Money is the biggest reason I've been stuck in so many unpleasant situations. Like, I stayed at a workplace where I was being bullied, because of money concerns.

I'm incredibly lucky that my husband earns enough for us to scrape by on one income, so I can stay home with the baby during this important time. But I'm also well aware that our luck could run out.

Oh crap! And here I was automatically assuming you're on parental leave...

Well, I am, but it's unpaid. You get a brief period where you get some income support from the government (3 months), and then nothing.

After that, you're actively penalised for earning any money at all (commissions, odd jobs, etc) unless you go back to work. But that doesn't fit with my ideals for parenting… everything I've read says it's very important for the baby to be with their mum for the first year or so. Late capitalism is in disagreement with the requirements for human development.

It really, really is. It's very depressing these days to see how far along we are with the whole "you're worthless as a human being unless you can work/spend" thing.

Combined with attitudes about how "millennials" are lazy and entitled, and it just… angries up the blood. I don't know where all these "lazy" millennials are that they complain about but everyone I know is very hard working and just wants to be given half a chance/some stability/acknowledgement that they are a human being.

WHY AREN'T YOU MINDLESSLY SPENDING ALL THE MONEY WE WON'T GIVE YOU?!

In other news:

"Subject: Fire. Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to inform you of a fire that has broken out on the premises of 20 Rogett Street... no, that's too formal.
[deletes text, starts again]
Fire - exclamation mark - fire - exclamation mark - help me - exclamation mark. 20 Rogett Street. Looking forward to hearing from you. Yours truly, Tarale."

As near as anyone can tell, spontaneous combustion of dry materials.

Which is to say, we have absolutely no idea, but it is extremely hot today and the grass was extremely dry.

EDIT: another theory has emerged, which is that the plumber did it, a few hours earlier. He would have used a grinder when he installed a tap in our back yard. It would have sent sparks flying. They would have smouldered for hours in the heat before… yeah.

yeah, I guess considering that living decently or living at all should be a right, is 'entitled'

because it's morally better to decide who should and shouldn't be allowed to live

tbh I don't care much about that bullshit tho. what is more upsetting is how deeply normalized that shit is for most people. they just can't see anything different. or when they do, it's the typical "communism doesn't work, USSR failed. see, humans are bad and greedy and lazy and bad".
