I've been trying to get back into reading. I recently bought a Kindle and with it a few books; the first one I read through was Innumeracy, which (while good) wasn't the one I remembered. It's largely about how people tend to not understand basic numbers, probabilities, and other things, with some nice examples.

More recently is the new-release Fire and Fury, a book about the US's awful president and how much of a fuckup he and his team is. It's... pretty amazing, but quite a bit is stuff I already knew just from following the news around the time.

Also up next on the reading list are Alex Zandra's I Asked For Squid Maids But I Didn't Know I'd Become One! and My Friends And I Were Granted Three Wishes By A Cat Goddess And I Swear I Got Distracted When My Turn Came Around (the latter one first, most likely). I actually tried to start them, but the paragraph formatting is non-standard and doesn't break when different characters talk, so it feels really... cluttered? Dense? One of those.

And I also learned that apparently I can put manga on the kindle so Reading is an expensive hobby...

Edit: I also have this queued up at some point, which I forgot about until checking the 'where did my money go again' section on Amazon

I wish I could say I read to relax, but most of my reading is just on the crapper at work or when I go to lunch It's too hard to focus otherwise, with so much else wanting my attention.

I don't have any regular books on it yet, as a matter of fact all I have on it right now is manga

Well, as of right know all I have on it are the first 5 volumes of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou and the first volume of 3x3 Eyes.

The first one takes place in a peaceful post-apocalyptic Japan and includes both sci-fi and slice of life elements. The whole atmosphere of it is very calm.

The second one is really hard to explain, but essentially a regular guy named Yakumo is made an immortal servant of a demon with two sides, a demon side (Sanjiyan) and a calmer, more humane side (Pai). He goes on a quest to try to turn her into a human, which is want she wants. The storyline is extremely complex, and spans 40 volumes.

I signed up for Goodreads to see if maybe it can push out some useful recommendations and mostly to keep track of reading, since I'm serious about trying to get back into the habit. It's ... kind of difficult when your brain really wants distractions, but I'm doing what I can.

Speaking of, I just crossed the 50% mark in Fire and Fury and I'm liking it a lot so far.

Speaking of manga on the Kindle, there's a really nice utility called Kindle Comic Converter that will take a comic in images or in an archive and will resize it and optimize it for your device! (if you have a pdf you'll have to cut it up into images first, but you can do that with an Automator task in OSX and I imagine it's pretty easy in other OSes also). It's incredibly useful if you have comics in any digital format that you've purchased from places other than the Amazon store or that you've ripped from online archives (webcomics, scanlation readers, etc). I use it a lot for work to be able to read stuff on my partner's paperwhite! Honestly, manga looks amazing on that thing.

Other than comics and work-related stuff, these days I've mostly been reading nonfiction… I've been working my way through Judith Herman's Trauma and Recovery in my downtime.

Huh, that's a pretty useful tool. Probably would be more useful if I had stuff to use it with

Reminds me, for some reason the Card Captor Sakura collection on Amazon apparently has the third volume twice for some reason..?

The most current English versions should be four volumes of Cardcaptor Sakura from Dark Horse (each 500ish pages and covering 3 volumes of the original) and 1 volume of the sequel Clear Card from Kodansha Comics (which I translated, incidentally). I don't know what you're looking at but those five are all that's out right now unless you're picking up old out of print titles…

This is what I mean, but the site seems inconsistent about it now. When I was looking at it on my Kindle, it was showing 4 individual books, and the third volume seemed to be repeated twice with a slightly different title. Right now, the only sign of this seems to be that this book is marked as 4 of 3.

The bundle itself is showing just three again.

Weird.

These are the latest ones:

It looks like this entry is for volume 4 on the Kindle store and is just mislabeled. The copy text and cover image are from 4 and the "print edition" linked is 4…

Where's Spot? is a gripping mystery with a cast of exciting characters. Written from the perspective of Sally, living through a parent's worst fears, it follows her search for her son. With a cracking pace that'll keep you turning the pages, and twists and turns throughout, Where's Spot? is well worth your time.

I just finished Fire and Fury; it's... pretty much what I expected: a look inside the Trump offices, how he managed to get there, and probably most stunningly, just how dysfunctional that whole mess is.

Good grief.

I read a lot of, uh, fan fiction. There's a lot of trash when it comes to fan faction, I'm sure most are aware. But I still like to argue that the amount of trash is still pretty close to the same level as actual books, proper releases might just have less newbie writer mistakes.

Practically all of it is MLP stuff, but I kinda like the universe and stopped caring about the direction the actual show went years ago. There is a lot more interesting ideas and concepts explored in some of the fan works, and I honestly think it can help novice writers to already have an established cast that they can, but don't have to, draw from. Usually the summery/description of a work is enough to say if it's gonna be low quality or not, but a few I have had to drop a bit in because they are just awful. BUT! I have read a lot of really nice and interesting stuff too.

I used to read fantasy books a lot back in the day, but eh, not so much anymore. I know it's not a well respected series, but I liked the Sword of Truth series back when I read it (8-10 years ago...?). Even if I can pick up at least a few problematic aspects with certain scenes today.

At this point in the internet there's no shame in reading or writing fanfiction, at least in my eyes.

I have a stack of sci-fi books that I want to read through at some point. I got started on The Moon is a Harsh Mistress but I haven't touched it for months.

Now is the best time to pick it back up!

Meanwhile, I'm trying to decide what to read next. Cat Wishes is still there, but so is The Rook and potentially other things.

Masters of Doom tells the story of John Romero and John Carmack meeting, making games together, and being jerks. It's an excellent look at the early PC games industry, and highlights a lot of the toxic masculinity within gaming that persists even today.

I still like Commander Keen though.

I have all three volumes of The Lord of the Rings, Shogun, and a book about Japan in 1941 on my shelf, but I've been too lazy to read them

(also the Magic: The Gathering novels and other stuff in my Dropbox, iirc)

I've been doing what I can to continue reading, but every time I pull out my Kindle for a certain book, I just kind of lose focus and find my phone much more interesting.

It's a little more complex than that, but immensely frustrating afterwards...
