How much of your old stuff do you keep? Files and data-wise, I mean. I've been trying to archive anything I can find of my old systems and turn them into VMs for later research, but I've already permanently lost a lot of stuff for reasons out of my control...

There are some holes, but I have most of my data since 2005 or so. I can spend a lot of time digging through it, so I actually try to avoid doing that.

I have very little prior to 2007-08 or so, which is when I finally had a computer that wasn't shared with the rest of my family. Most of what I do have from before then is personal creative stuff (music, etc) from the few years before that, but stuff like IRC logs and other fun things are basically gone.

I also have a hard drive kicking around at my mom's house with a lot of stuff I made from around 1993 up to maybe 1999 or so, but it's probably in poor condition and I have no idea how much of it would be salvageable. Oh well.

I don't really intend to go through much of it other than as a curiosity and to maybe find some of the old things I made; I'm just a little sad at how much of what I did ended up vanishing, and if I can hold onto it, even if I don't intend to use it in a meaningful way, so much the better

devin: Never know, I recovered a 1.6 gb hard drive and only lost about 4k of data from it

I've kept stuff from back in 2007 or so up until now.

I have made backups of my documents yearly from 2011 to 2014. Then for a few years I stopped (because there were simply too many files to burn to a DVD) and only started again last year once I organized everything again.

I have some photos all the way back from 2008 (it sounds like a long time to me, alright!), and IRC logs for the entirety of the time where I used IRC (which isn't much, like 2015-2017). Some data happened to exist only between backups, which means that they got lost. I sort of wanted to hear my old songs that I used to make when I was like 9 or 10. They're probably really bad (they were MIDIs), but hey it's still interesting to know what I was doing at the time.

If there's early stuff around it's probably on my parent's external hard drive. I know a lot of my old Game Maker stuff is there, and I don't know if I copied those to a place I have easier access to.
Otherwise I probably only started saving my stuff when I started doing pixel art, which file dates tells me is sometime in 2013. It's unfortunate as my memory is very selectively bad.

I know it's not data-related but:
When I started taking drawing slightly more seriously I specifically got a sketchbook and for the most part dated what I did, so a lot of that from the latter half of 2014 onward I still have but not before then.

I just remembered, I have a CD around from I-don't-know-when containing the results of me wanting to make stop-motion video as a teen.

I've been keeping a backup of things since I first got my "own" computer in the late 1990s, back around the Final Fantasy VII Citadel days.

It's pretty much all art though, none of the site stuff or any of that. For some reason, the timestamps for the very old stuff says "2003" and I can't figure out why. There are a few non-art things, that I might need for legal reasons or whatever, but it's… pretty much all my major artworks.

Unfortunately I can't read a lot of the files any more as they are for software that no longer works. There's a whole period of openCanvas stuff, for instance. I should probably see if I can find a way to read them and convert them to Photoshop files or something at some point… but ughhhhh… there's a lot of things there I may never get working.

I have a lot of my stuff from around 2010 and later, except for the Windows 7 hard drive that I wiped entirely to put an XP/Lubuntu dual boot thing on, but I backed up the important stuff off of it before the great wipe. I do have a few things prior to 2010 on the hard drive that came with my emachine (which is buried in a desk drawer) but not sure as to how much, and it's likely just photos and other junk.

My history is lost on a drive that nobody can locate.

And the stuff that was online is long gone because private hosts ate shit eventually.

most of my online stuff was on MajHost back when, which has become a lifeless purgatory.

my school drive doesn't exist anymore

the two PCs i used through middle school and high school were frankensteined into other machines, though i was able to transfer some stuff i really wanted from them to my laptop, though. mostly game project files.

in slightly related news, my oldest online account turned eighteen last week. i still use it from time to time too.

I might still have OpenCanvas somewhere, that was a nice program.

I finally managed to get one of the drives "working" as a VM; Windows XP SP1 with a broken activation, with no apparent way to fix it — none of the techniques on the internet worked. I assume it's just busted. I'll probably try to grab the files off of it later because there's a decent amount of old stuff on there, including some of my old pixel art (yikes)

Speaking of FF7C, I found what appears to be an old screenshot of it with Acmlm's scribbles all over it, as well as some of his old homepage and other random crap. That stuff has got to be ancient.

I'll see if I can extract it along with all the other stuff. It looks like that PC might also have had some data relating to my old attempt to put Marin in Link's Awakening.

It's weird to think that OpenCanvas is just... gone? That used to be a thing that saw a lot of use, iirc, and now it feels like it's just missing.

I have old personal files going back to 1999. Documents for school, MP3s, custom animated GIFS, failed FFAlexandria layouts, various Final Fantasy images intended for use in said FFAlexandria layouts, stupid Photoshop effect experimentation images, and a lot of old PHP scripts. Oddly enough, I didn't save much in the way of the mySQL databases that ran my message boards and websites. I only have 1 or 2 and they're from midway through the site's lifespan. I have some old photos that I used to get from Walmart when I had them process my disposable cameras, you could get them to put the images on a CD for you. Much easier than scanning them myself.

I think the oldest stuff I have is from 2004. I have an Iomega 80GB drive and an external HDD enclosure with some projects from my freshman year in college and a small collection of pirated games. I also have a wallet filled with CD-Rs of anime from around that time too.

My music collection follows me from computer to computer, so I don't ever think of it as old data... even though I remember downloading some of these Dwelling of Duels remixes from 2004 when they were initially released.

CD-Rs full of anime I remember when I had to mail someone some of those because they were on dialup, heh.

I pretty much have almost everything in a way or another.

The legacy of the "original" 2004 PC (power supply failure in Aug. 2011) lives on as an external hard drive where all the old stuff is still there. This includes the "mspaint fun extravaganza" I've done when I was 9. Heh.

However, I did lose everything in the C: partition in 2008 since the OEM was not providing a way to do a recovery install without losing data (thanks, Packard Bell). And this was before the era I had access to live CDs.

At least the D:\ drive, where 'Documents and Settings' was stored was untouched so most of the actual data wasn't lost .

I have just about everything from 2006 onward. Most of the only missing files from after 2006 I can recall are a lot of things I did for homework in middle and high school. Regrettably, that includes almost everything I made in my second year computer graphics class. At the end of the year, we burned everything onto a CD, and it managed to break in my backpack before I got home.

Before then, I used a couple of old family computers. One of them is long gone, but there wasn't very much on it. The main thing of interest I lost was a whole bunch of maps I made in Graal.

The other one's hard drive is still around, but we were never able to recover the files off of it after it failed many years ago. I could try again at some point, though. It has a bunch of ancient and obscure Macintosh games on there. It also has a whole bunch of drawings I made in Kid Pix when I was a child and even some 3D graphics I made in a program called Render-Boy, so I'd be interested to see those again some day.

I also have my grandmother's old computer, an iMac that runs Mac OS 8, but there's very little on there except some of her writings, which have already been printed out.
