chances are one of the "nuke user" features doesn't clean up post counts properly and some spammer posted in this thread recently

unfortunately at some point the admin threadfix tools appear to have suffered code rot and don't work, so i'll need to figure out why that happens and fix it, eventually

Well it's not really tech debt in this case, it's something that was working before but some update broke it.

Ah, those. Also super fun. Honestly, after all this time I’m surprised there aren’t more weird things going on.

Yeah, me too. PHP7 is going to obliterate everything (I think; there might already be mitigations in place).

I'd have to figure out exactly what's going on with the query, since it seems like a MySQL update broke it and something that used to just be ignored is now causing it to break.

I feel really miserable knowing that my weekend is already over, when I had to spend several hours of Saturday doing work shit anyway.

That sucks. I know you don't get your break back, but please tell me they pay you overtime or on-call or something for it??

I don't get overtime because I'm salary and while I think I'm paid fairly well, I'm effectively on-call 24-hours

And the on-call issues are very good at happening at the worst times, like "driving down the freeway at 85mph to vacation" or "sitting in the hotel hot-patching some stupid issue while everyone else is out having drinks and going to the beach"

everything sucks and is terrible

Wait, what, don't they even have a roster for on-call? Like… is it just you? There's no arrangement for you to have a vacation or anything?? Fucking… crazy

Sooooooooooo how's that job hunting going?

Small shop, 2 php 2 c# and like 5 other staff. I've been 24/7 on-call for the last 4+ years and it's never really going to change.

Job hunting is dead because there's nothing in this town, and I'm basically dysfunctional now any way.

Ah. Yeah, I'm afraid of the same when I return to work once I don't need to be a full-time mum any more. Employment in this city is pretty bad, and I know I have huge skillset rot from my job (plus this career hiatus) and bad work habits (although I guess every workplace trains you to be a particular kind of dysfunctional).

There are two options in that situation I guess? Moving to another town is one, or pivoting to a different career?

For me, moving is not an option I'm willing to consider, at least for the moment. But I am considering a pivot… perhaps doing a Bachelor of Creative Arts and getting into art for games/movies/animation? I am not sure. It seems a little like a real option and a little like a crazy dream.

I really want to move out of this place; I just can't. :/ I'm tired of doing programming work but I don't have too much money saved and I don't really know what to do.

Yeah, these things are definitely not easy, and most big life changes seem to have costs attached. Then there's the general sense of unsureness about how to… even… do these big things.

With the art study thing, a lot of why it feels like a crazy dream is all tied up in either money or anxiety. I don't know if I can afford the course. I don't know if I can get into the course. I don't know what I need to do to get into the course. I don't know if I can even overcome my anxieties to look into it properly. I'm afraid of failure.

Money is frustrating. In large part it's the reason I stayed in this state for undergrad (well, the whole reason actually, considering I would have applied a lot more places otherwise). I especially hate what a weapon it can be until you have a degree and can actually fend for yourself -- I've seen a lot of people have to postpone otherwise-harmless choices because some family member wouldn't have supported them. Or just because society in general doesn't value something...

And as above, I hope you find some way into better employment. That kind of constant, unpredictable drain on my time would destroy me.

Yeeep.

I don't mind where I am very much (hell, to an extent I even like it), but aside from brief trips out of state for something or other (shopping, visiting an aunt who lived just across the border, trips in high school) I haven't really left this state, let alone this little part of the state since 2005. (2007/2008 if you want to count high school trips to NYC/DC, but eh, I dunno how much those really count given their short duration)

I want to go somewhere sometime, but I can't afford it. I've not even taken any vacation time because I'd like to actually use it for something when I finally do, but if I just sit at home that's just money I'm losing since it'll get paid out to me if it's unused

ahhh

Yeahhhh… it really dictates what you can and can't make of your life. Money is the biggest reason I've been stuck in so many unpleasant situations. Like, I stayed at a workplace where I was being bullied, because of money concerns.

I'm incredibly lucky that my husband earns enough for us to scrape by on one income, so I can stay home with the baby during this important time. But I'm also well aware that our luck could run out.
