Mastodon is a decentralized social media network thing that's basically Twitter Minus Nazis. It's a lot smaller (and more personal), searching only really finds hashtags, and it's generally a much smaller community. Sort of like this place, really.

I have an account on an instance at @xkeeper@icosahedron.website, but you can sign up pretty much anywhere and still talk to people. The first link up there has a list of instances you can join, or I guess I could try suggesting some if you're interested in trying it out

I also use Mastodon! I run a tiny instance at catgirl.solutions, and by tiny I mean it's basically just me

Mastodon is starting to hit the state for me where there's enough people I follow on it that it's worth staying on, so I definitely encourage people to check it out if they use twitter and are (like most people I see on it) unhappy with the direction it's going.

I never bothered much with social media until late last year, so I skipped Twitter entirely. By then pretty much everyone agreed that any suitable description for that place includes "fire" and/or "shit".

I'm over at @BatElite@computerfairi.es. I chose there simply because one other place had registrations closed and another had problems with theirs. If it matters any, one thing the person(s) running the instance does is filter out instances that are being unpleasant.

I've been considerably more active there than here (not very), for one because a lot of stuff I feel like posting (bad to terrible jokes) seem to me to be below this place.

I just wish for now that there was a way to make a reply not show up in the timelines of people not mentioned, without resorting to DMs. I don't mind people reading this stuff, I just don't want to spam their timelines with semi-private conversation.

I'm revenant@mastodon.social. I've been there since last November or so, before a lot of the currently popular alternate instances existed, but I've also just not felt like moving over to a different one at this point (such as the aforementioned computerfairi.es, which is run by a friend of mine!)

Anyway, I still don't usually post on there as much as I do on Twitter, but it sure feels a hell of a lot nicer to do so. You're welcome to follow me if you enjoy extremely bad posts.

Conversations like that only show up in the columns of people who are following both of you; and if you don't want even that, then just using DMs seems to be the best solution

Since I just joined here from a link on mastodon, this seems as good a thread as any to make my first post in.

I'm DeltaWitch@witches.town. I've basically stopped using twitter since signing up, except occasionally directly checking the feeds of one or two people I care about. Also, it turns out, the whole "In case you missed it"/non-chronological timeline twitter has now is actually useful - it means you can check it for like a minute every week or two and not feel like you've really missed anything. Not quite what they were going for, I'm sure, but hey, I'll take it.

That's what it seems like it would be useful, but it always appeared for me even if I was using the account recently, and it would even show things I'd already liked or replied to (and therefore didn't miss). I think it also might make things a little iffy since you might very well miss things and just assume that the algorithms would show you everything.

Yeah, when I was still actively using twitter, it was awful. It'd very quickly become 25+% repeated content, and just get worse the further down I scrolled. But, I felt a need to keep going anyway, because there was still the occasional thing I hadn't seen. It was enough to turn me off from really using it, but it's a nice summary now that I don't try to keep up with everything.

Tweetdeck (or really any third-party client) helps that problem immensely because you avoid all the bullshit Twitter does.

But the real problem is that it's easy to follow someone, and follow someone else, and so on, until your timeline(s) are nothing but noise, where it's impossible to find updates by certain people because they're drowned out by everyone else.

My Twitter account is basically abandoned because I don't really use it for anything, maybe I should try out Mastodon soon. I'm not sure exactly what server/community I would fit best though, I might end up a bit lost in the beginning.

We keep turning signups off because halcy panics when we get like, ten consecutive signups of people who never change their account details.

I still think Mastodon is interesting, if not new and exciting. It's a nicer place than Twitter at least, and a refreshing change from my firehose of a feed with 1000 follows

I really wish we had a better way of showing off art and writing and works in general that wasn't Twitter (or Tumblr or dA) for that matter, because a lot of people do a lot of cool things and I miss out on them all the time

URIs must be properly escaped, they must not contain unescaped
characters below U+0021 including the space character and not
above U+007E. Tidy escapes the URI for you as recommended by
HTML 4.01 section B.2.1 and XML 1.0 section 4.2.2. Some user agents
