Personally I fit into that last one, but I mostly get news and updates via Twitter. Living dangerously in an era of constant bullshit, that's me.

I cannot ignore news and current events with my current line of work. I wind up finding about things one way or another.

I don't even use Twitter any more. But chats keep me up to date on the really important stuff. Means I miss on local matters, though.

basically

but I don't actually watch news, most of it's from reddit, local news via facebook, etc.

90% of the news I get (and have gotten for the past 5 years really) is from either people talking to me about stuff IRL or Twitter/Facebook/etc

gonna echo the sentiment of everyone who wishes they could avoid it tho, it gets exhausting/depressing sometimes (frequently) (very frequently)

this (almost) perfectly describes how I feel

(except that the majority of news comes either from IRC or when others IRL tell me something they heard on TV)

Unfortunate coincidence with making this thread and then having particularly awful news hit, huh.

On particularly bad mental days I just try to avoid news. Flatly telling people like BMF and Raspberry to, if they find out anything, just not tell me.

It doesn't work so well just because social media, but.

Twitter, which usually means I get a lot of ominous sounding nonsense and gallows humour, and have to work backwards to figure out what the fuck actually happened.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot that I’m subscribed to InDaily, which is a local news source, and I get emails. But I ignore a lot of them and mostly zone in on the local food recommendations and openings of new restaurants.

I just try to quit keeping up with the news altogether.

I get tired of just hearing about what horrible thing happened today, how many people died today in [thing that happened], that it's like...if I wanna be freaked out and paranoid, I'll just watch a good horror movie, thanks.

I used to have my home page be the front page of Yahoo for years. Not no more though. Now it's the inbox of my e-mail account.

I try to avoid political news. I don't mind local news, especially with all of the hurricanes lately.

I guess I keep up with gaming news thanks to boogie2988, but aside from that, I only see the news when I happen to stumble upon anything by pure chance. I'm usually out of touch with the news, and people don't talk to me about the recent events either (it's not like I would have much to respond anyway). I should watch the morning news on TV though, those usually aren't that depressing.

I would get my news through means such as Twitter, but I avoid following people that start posting too much about politics and I only check my Twitter account monthly or so.

Kind of but not really. I don’t look for the news but the news finds me. Here’s why I don’t look for it.

If it’s local news, it’s generally boring shit, stuff that isn’t surprising or just a lot of negative shit.

“Car crashes reported ...”
“Fires in buildings ...”

[sarcasm]Wow, really? Never would have guessed that.[/sacrasm]

If it’s news on a more national level, it’s about republicans and democrats slinging mud at each other.

When it isn’t that, it’s about something big like the recent Vegas shooting. Of course, the news being the news, they’ll want to pound every story into the ground and milk that shit clean and dry.

With all that garbage above, it’s a wonder anybody listens at all.

Some people in this thread also mention gaming news. For stuff like E3 or Nintendo Directs, I don’t even bother watching anymore. It’s just so much easier to look up a news article after the fact to see the highlights. Waste 5 minutes for a summary vs wasting an hour on what are usually a bunch of shitty reveals.

For general game news, just look for what is being shitposted by people.

I simultaneously do and do not. I have some idea, if vague what is going on locally but I generally find out what (mostly terrible) stuff happens in the U.S. (and sometimes elsewhere) via social media. Otherwise I sometimes get stuff from when the TV happens to be on or I flip through the newspaper when bored.

I read-ish it weekly.
Like, I hear about enough from other people who got it.
And I'm an auditory modality, so it's just like reading...

I keep up with the news daily, as it's important to know whats going on, but I find it tougher than ever to find an outlet that doesn't dissolve itself into being written like an opinion laden blog.

I may need to try that subreddit idea and aggregate some decent sources.
