I'm wondering if there are anymore old websites like jul and so on? That focus on the old philosophy of the retro web?

Does anyone remember AOL Hometown pages from years ago? They were discontinued years ago, but it was my first presence on the web ever.

RIP members.aol.com/xdany87, having served various websites, then as data storage, then as data storage that didn't show the directory listing but instead only this image. And then languished, even after we were no longer with AOL, until it was eventually shut down with all the other sites. I did manage to FTP into and back up all my files when they announced the shutdown, tho.

As for today, tho... I guess I'm glad for every website, or mobile version of one, that isn't too heavy on the JavaScript and CSS, so that I can use it on my PowerBook G4? But truly simple, lightweight sites are a bit of a rarity, especially ones that actually do something, have some sort of use.

There's that online commerce site I've used that feels retro, dunno if it's intentional but it's refreshing after all those modern sites that rudely pop up dumb overlays in your face and have all sorts of distracting widgets.

Also worth noting that they don't start sending promotional spam as soon as they can snatch your email, either. Infact the only contact I got from them was basically "your order has been shipped".

(most sites will atleast wait for you to submit anything, but I have been on sites where just typing in an email address, without submitting anything, was enough to get it registered in their promospam broadcast system)

There's a reason I keep my old Hotmail account around.

(Speaking of old websites, anybody remember the old pre-Microsoft HoTMaiL? I don't even remember what the site looked like when I signed up 20 years ago...)

Oh my god, is that really the etymology? Is it called Hotmail because it had a HTML client? My mind is blown.

Yep, it’s because webmail was a big deal back in the day. I mean, email was around for ages and ages, long before the ole www, but webmail, in your browser, with HTML… ooooooo

Yeah, though I'm not sure they ever rendered it like that on the site itself. I think I saw it in an old email header or something.

I remember using a WYSIWYG webpage editor called "HoTMetaL PRO" back in the old days, too...

There used to be a bunch of webmail clients, but none of them have really stood up against the likes of Gmail and such. RIP Squirrelmail.

Ah, I remember David's site. Lots of very weird glitches and other strange stuff.

That aside, given that the site hasn't been updated in nearly a decade, where's the secret page supposed to be?
