Do y'all spend the holidays with family, friends, neither? Both?

I guess the lines are blurry for those of us whose friends are family, but in my case I used to go with my "actual" family for most years. This year I might skip that and stay home with friends; I've grown increasingly distant with family over the last few years, and I'm not really interested in the gift aspect.

Ughhhhhh faaaaaaaamillyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Well, it’s not like I hate them or anything, I just find it very exhausting. Christmas Day always has two events, minimum. One with my side of the family, and one with my husband’s. There’s always some fuss about who is having the lunch and dinner slots and where they are and all of that. Up until a few years ago that was stressful enough…

…and then I done did get knocked up.

See, that fucked things up so much worse because my mother-in-law is a smoker. She’s smoked inside her house for 35+ years. And that means her house is absolutely coated with third-hand smoke… and completely unsafe for a pregnant woman and a new baby to visit.

To say this has caused tension around Christmas time would be an understatement. To make it worse, she has MS, and can’t leave the house often during summer because of the heat. SO basically, from her perspective, we’re denying her access to her grandson because we’re paranoid overparenters, and it’s CHRISTMAS, and there’s “no such thing” as third-hand smoke and it doesn’t hurt babies and we’re the worst people ever.

The tradition during the last few years was, I spent Christmas here at my mother's house, and then went to my father's house during the New Year and stayed there for a little while after as well. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are one of the few times where I actually stay awake until midnight. During Christmas Eve, quite a few people from my family come over to visit. Not so much during New Years (which I prefer).

This year, I'm not sure if this "tradition" will continue or not due to various reasons.

this is the first time i’m going to go home to see my family for Christmas since 2011. it’s been rough, but to be honest, i’m really excited to be home for Christmas this time.

part of the reason i’m excited, though, is that in the past year my relationship w/ my dad has grown a lot. as a kid, our relationship was always bad and we never understood each other. but that has changed, so now i’m excited.

the other thing is, my dad is born on Christmas, so we’re celebrating his birthday too. we’re going to spend a few days in Newport, Rhode Island, which i’m confused about since we’re going to a resort town in the dead of winter. but maybe it could be fun. perhaps this town has some sort of renowned Christmas celebration.

either way, i’m excited to be home and spend time w/ the old man and see what few friends i have left in New England.

We usually go see some family upstate for Christmas each year. It's usually the one guaranteed time we can see each other. Plus, they live next to a dairy farm, and a new mircobrewery just opened up. So yeah, I love it up there.

Fresh milk and cookies or craft beers. You can't go wrong either way.

This is an accurate description of my situation as well. (Though for different reasons )

when i was younger we celebrated with both sides of the family - dad's side on christmas eve, mom's side on christmas day. when i was about eight or nine we had a falling out with most of mom's side, so dad's family is p much the only group we'd spend any holidays with. threeish years ago me and dad moved out of state though, so now me and him have dinner on my birthday every year (which is a couple days after christmas, so it's still holiday-ish) along with his mom who flies out here for a few days at the end of the year.

that said, i'm not exactly a fan of him, and now that i'm living with my older sister i'm hoping we can just celebrate the holidays quietly.

also this is the first year i've had to buy presents for people. i should really get to that soon...

If your reasons are what I think, I may be in a similar situation this year. Oh what fun it will be.
