I had a feeling this system was in trouble but I didn't know it'd be this bad...my blue screens have been getting worse as the days progress.

Ran it last night just to confirm my fears and I got more than I bargained for. Gets to test 2 at about 21% (inversion of 0s and 1s) and the errors then dogpile and cause Memtest86 to halt by hitting the max errors of 32768 or so. Reseating RAM, taking out RAM, changing channels of RAM and all that jazz yield the same results. It gets to 21% on test 2, it flakes out.

Can I assume the motherboard or processor is shot or is this something more simple than that?

EDIT: Also, my seek error rate on my 500GB Seagate is climbing...too close to the threshold actually. It was at 67 a month ago, it's at 51 now and 30 is the threshold. TEC looks to be in early February at the rate things are going.

If it was crapping out like that, I'd almost assume the motherboard is bad... It always does it at 21%, regardless of what's actually in, and where?

And the hard drive, ugh... If you buy a new one, I prefer Maxtor... Seagate HDDs have a 5-year warranty though, so if worst comes to worst, you can probably get it replaced (just find somewhere to copy things)

(As an unrelated aside, Memtest86 crashed whenever I moved the mouse on some fairly-recent-but-still-crappy PC...)

Though, uh, are you using Memtest86 Plus, or just Memtest86?

Actually, Seagate and Maxtor are the same company now, and Maxtor is Seagate's line of "value" drives, AFAIK (and they come with shorter warranties, last I checked).

Also, I doubt the motherboard is bad. I had a bad stick of RAM in an older PC that would give the same errors on the same test every time. Replacing the bad stick fixed everything (until the motherboard actually did go bad, a while later).

Well here's a nice little piece of info...

I ran MEMTEST86 at the office on two comps. Errors around the same spot on two different RAM systems (DDR and DDR2).

Besides, this was erroring out before I got new RAM in here and I've tested both sticks separately. My guess is flaked mobo.

That makes me think your copy of Memtest86 is corrupted in some way, if it works breaks on otherwise fine systems.

Edit: Wow, I broke my entire post with one word. I'm stupid.

Yeeeeeeeah...you might want to make sure you have the latest version of Memtest86+. It sounds to me like you have the old (non-plus) version, and it has problems with newer systems...

Did that.

Now it doesn't even wanna boot right.

Gives a bunch of address (like stack) errors on floppy boot.

If this is one of those machines with a separate cache memory stick, take a look at it. I had a computer that would randomly crash during bootup because that was faulty.

Otherwise, I know Memtest86+ won't boot up on some machines for whatever reason, so see if you can find some other diagnostic programs.

Well, I ended up yanking a strip out, figuring the new strip worked better than the new one.

Needless to say, said strip booted slow and when I right-clicked on Recycle Bin, the whole system froze. I figured something might've been up when I ran a Microsoft-based memory diagnostic...got to uncached and it slowed to a crawling death.

So far so good. I might be able to get an RMA but it's been three months.
