Oh god, I miss Chameleon Clock so much. It probably would've worked on Windows 7 and up, but I never really thought to throw it on those systems.

Closest I've found these days is an Xfce panel clock widget that mimics my old chamclock setup somewhat.

I know I could probably customize a lot more, being on Linux systems nowadays, but I really don't have the energy to hunt down and modify things like I used to.

At least there's GNOME/MATE versions of some old XP visual styles, if I ever feel like that! Only issue is, they're a bit older, so not everything might work quite the same... that, and I generally prefer darker themes these days anyway.

i have a couple Bionicle desktop toys sitting on my harddrive somewhere. I used to mess with the Toa and Bohrok ones every now and then, and i think they could interact with eachother if there were multiple instances of one running? memory's a little fuzzy on that bit

I have the teal Taravaka from the first generation Bionicles. I also have a number of the original Technic Throwbots. I still use LEGO to make characters and draft stories for the graphic novel I am working on.

Also, I think they're talking about virtual window sitters, not physical ones that occupy the seat of a window sill. Those are still a thing, anyway.

System properties and hard disk details

I bought a 16 GB CompactFlash card, a CF-to-EIDE adapter, and a 128 MB stick of ancient SODIMM RAM. I spent last night migrating the disk (surprisingly painless) and installing the memory -- turns out that it's right under the keyboard, which pulls out really easily.

It's a little snappier, and now meets the minimum requirements for Windows NT; it'd be fun to see if I can split the drive into two 8 GB chunks and install Windows 2000 on it

So it turns out that K-Meleon is a (relatively) modern browser that supports modern HTTPS protocols... and works on Windows 98, of course. Later versions don't, or at least don't without KernelEx, but having this basically means that I can do pretty much anything that this old laptop is capable of. It's pretty neat being able to browse TCRF again! Though for some reason the HTTPS version of this reply page doesn't seem to get along with it...

I've gotta wonder, was the 32MB of RAM it originally had on the board itself, or is it all in RAM slots?

I kinda wonder just how high that thing could go with RAM. I have a Win98 machine with 384MB and it seemed pretty speedy the couple times I used it, but this was also... maybe seven years ago.

(also, how's the CF speed? I have a tablet PC I feel might benefit from a new disk, but dunno if I can justify spending too much on it...)

The CF speed seems fine, but it's not like I ran benchmarks.

The 32 MB is on-board somewhere; there's a single slot under the keyboard that accepts up to 128MB, hence 32 + 128 = 160 MB.
