For an ambitious story involving teleportation, futuristic technology, alternate realities, girls wielding giant swords, friendly giants, fierce fictional creatures, wisecrack shapeshifting weirdos made of brain matter and space matter, crazy evil scythe-bearing phantoms, faceless cyborgs, immortal weasels, and a bunch of kids coming of age and learning the importance of being oneself...
...Which media form best befits to be most appealing before proceeding to other forms?

1) Novel, 2) Complete Graphic Novel, 3) Growing Graphic Novel, 4) Illustrated Novel, 5) Comic Series, 6) Manga, 7) Anime, 8) Webcomic, 9) Animated Series, 10) Screenplay, 11) Book Series, 12) Video Game [please specify RPG, JRPG, MMORPG, Platform, Collectathon, etc.], or 13) something else [please specify].

I am currently drawing the same elements of the story over and over while I discuss it with my cousin, but if we plan to go big , we want to start in the right medium.

You're approaching this backwards. First, figure out what form of media you think you can work with. Then, figure out what kind of story you think you can tell with that medium.

You can tell just about any kind of story with any kind of medium if you're able to use it well, so being able to work with your medium is your biggest limitation. Are you and your cousin willing to either do all the work involved in making an entire animated series or to hire other people to help you with it? A video game? A comic series? A novel? All of those things require a lot of work, but they take vastly different amounts of work and different kinds of work.

Once you decide which kind of media you can actually make something with, then you decide which one you can tell your story with.


However, if there is one medium that you really want to work with, yet you feel like you'd be unable to tell this story with it after you've evaluated the amount of work it would take, then start of with a smaller project with that medium instead.

It can be easy to overestimate the amount of work it takes to work with a medium you have no experience with, so you should ideally start as small as possible and work your way up from there. For example, if you want to make a video game, don't start out with your ultimate dream project that would take years of dedicated work to complete; start out with something very simple, like a traditional arcade game, and see where you can go from there.

In other words, if you plan to go big, you have to start small first.


Regardless, if you want to tell that particular story and do it justice, then you'll have to work with the medium you think you can do it in, and which medium that is depends very much on how much work, time, money, and experience you and your cousin have at this point.

Thanks, Q! My cousin and I want to tell a story using the characters we had developed over a number of years, so we have a strong skeleton for how we're going to work on it. We just don't know what species this skeleton is. Is it a dragon (anime), a whale (novel), a human (screenplay), or a monster (graphic novel)? We started our passion with some drawings of the characters, and then a number of comics. I have since been a film student for 6 years, and screenwriting and other visual storytelling forms are a strong passion of mine. We then drew inspiration from Jeff Smith's Bone series, which is a graphic novel compiled over 20 years.

So I have taken note of your entire thorough advice, for which I am extremely appreciative! However, it doesn't exactly answer what I am asking... perhaps I should rephrase.

For the content I described, I am only wondering which form will be most attractive. Do people want to play video games with this content? Or do they want to binge-watch an anime series of it? Or is it the type of thing appealing to people who sit around reading manga that never seems to end (even though it eventually does end, they just started late)? Or perhaps it is something that would intrigue those following action comics or detective comics or Marvel comics... or Dynamite comics? You know... comic book printers. Then again, perhaps they want to read it in the style of a book, but they want to see what is shown because it is more fun to process things that are not extremely wordy? And then there is wanting to turn on the magic box to display an emotion-manipulative motion image... yeah, film/TV (live action or animated series like Ultimate Spider-Man or Avengers Assemble).

I just want to know what medium the material best seems to fit. My cousin and I can handle the rest, and if not, we'll have a blast trying! :1
