Pretty simple question. Note that this mostly refers to trips of any real distance, like a mile or so. You can vote in multiple options.



As for me, I drive my garbage vehicle pretty much everywhere, and usually am the one driving everyone else at home around. I don't do much of anything else, other than occasionally using Lyft rarely when said garbage vehicle is in the shop.

Results for this will vary wildly based on location, of course. For example, the subway/train option isn't even applicable here...

Generally, when getting around Prague, I use the excellent public transit consisting of the metro, trams, and buses. In Bochum, this will be the U-Bahn (basically just trains) as well as buses. I can also borrow bicycles for free as a student, and it's a nice way to reach school sometimes.

For longer distances I take whatever's available and cheap - usually buses, sometimes trains. If I'm going in a group, often there's somebody who drives and I'm thankful to hitch a ride.

For some distances it's just better and cheaper to fly than spend 20 hours in a train. And you can get some really good deals. (cough cough, 27 EUR plane ticket to Riga)

I am yet to try a ride-sharing service, something about those scare me.

I have no car and can't drive (even though I was pressured into getting a license years ago). I don't see a point in getting a car in the near future, either.

Another missing options would be Taxi/Uber/Lyft. I don't use it personally, but I know people who do use them regularly.

EDIT: Oh, and I take a ferry when I go between Tallinn and Helsinki.

I suppose I should've clarified this was more for the day-to-day stuff, oops. (I would certainly hope nobody's taking planes that often...)

I legit forgot the word for trams. Trolley sounded a little wrong, but I couldn't remember it. (Street car?)

I get around through a combination of carpooling, the bus, and my own two feet.

With where I live, biking *is* an option, but with where I physically live being on the top of a steep hill, as well as living in a convention center/town, traffic from hapless tourists makes an otherwise quiet, forested town kind of a non-option for me in an anxiety-provoking kind of way.

I mean even living in flat-as-a-pancake Illinois right by Chicago, dealing with car traffic as a cyclist was a pain to deal with. I'm waving at you to go because I can't completely stop without having to spend ten seconds getting myself back to speed but only if no other traffic gets in the goddamn way so fucking GO ALREADY JESUS! FUCKING! CHRIST!!!

...I have opinions with biking and traffic, lemme tell ya.

Well I can't ride a bike, so mainly I drive. Once in a while I'll walk somewhere just to switch it up (and everything in town is within a half hour's walk) but otherwise yeah.

The trains in here are actually very nice, even though they're still being modernized (takes ages for any of these public projects to complete). Unfortunately that's only useful for traveling between cities which I don't do very oftenly. For traveling around my own city, I usually either walk if it's close by or take the bus if it's not that close by. The terrain over here is so irregular, I'm sure some of you could mistake a bus ride for a moderate rollercoaster at times. Seriously.

biking represent! I live 5 miles from the office so I can just bike there in the mornings and shower and have breakfast at work--even if it's raining, I have bags to cover my backpack and clothes bag if needed.

In Boston trolleys (or trams for our European friends) go in the (one particular) subway. So adding a separate option for trams would have led to confusion :p

I get a bus to and from work. Unfortunately, it's an hour 30+ each way, which isn't the greatest thing in the world. Next thing for me to do is to learn how to drive and get a car, so I can cut my commute in half. Conveniently, with my Dad working for Arriva who do the buses over here, I haven't had to pay for a bus in over a decade!

A 1h30m commute may not actually be that bad if it's by bus, especially if the converse is 45 minutes of your own driving. Consider using that time to catch up on things you'd like to do (play games, read, write, etc.)

Driving for that long is kind of exhausting and it means that you can't do anything.


E: An alternative is a park-and-ride, if you can cut out a significant chunk of your commute. Driving 1/3 or 1/2 of the distance and then taking the bus for the rest might give you the best of both worlds, depending on how it ends up working out.

It is useful if I have something I can be working on in that hour and a half, like reading one of my various books on games development, but it's really a case of me trying to recover some portion of my afternoon/evenings, and not having to get up really early. I can handle a 4:30am start and getting back in at 6pm 5 days a week, but if I'm not so reliant on buses, I can switch to more normal hours.

I suppose I could take my laptop with me and try doing some Unity/Unreal work. I can guarantee I'll have the ability to do that on the mornings. Since it's a University bus route, I won't be able to do that on the way back, but I'd probably be too tired to do it anyway.

I mostly get around by public transport, particularly the O-Bahn. That's a guided bus, that travels along a concrete track/rail kind of thing for some of its journey (and is a regular bus the rest of the time). Because it doesn't have to deal with traffic, it's pretty quick. I also catch the tram from time to time.

I used to walk a lot more, and I'm starting to get back into it… at least to the shops and back most mornings.

I drive my own vehicle. My wife has the sensible SUV that has room for all 5 of us (3 kids now). I pay more per month for my car than I care to admit but it's a fun drive. Public transportation would take me about an hour or more to get to work each day. Biking would also take quite a while.

i literally just walk everywhere because i have no other choice. i don't have a car, my girlfriend won't let anyone drive hers (for good reasons), and i don't have a driver's license anyway (just a state ID -- yeah, seriously)

you figure i'd be skinnier but also i don't do nearly as much walking as i should cuz my girlfriend chauffeurs me around a lot too when she's home

i have a bike but i haven't really used it much because i don't really trust myself with it cuz i haven't rode a bike since i was a kid. also it has some problems with the tires that prolly need fixing, and i don't have a helmet rn. essentially i don't write it cuz i was lazy/depressed most of last year and i should prolly try to start using it soon cuz it'd be a billion times faster than walking

I prefer to go by train, but half the time, I have to commute with this for 10 Minutes and walk another 8 for the 13 Minute journey I could have had by train.

But the big irony about all of this, I then drive arround for 8+ hours with this and similar things.

I refuse to drive -- it's expensive, parking in central Glasgow is impossible, and the idea of being responsible for a massive moving chunk of metal freaks me out.

The subway is great but serves a limited range of areas, and costs £2.80 for a day's travel. Rail services are pretty good (and usually cheaper than the subway) but I often end up going to places that aren't served by convenient train stations.

Glasgow buses are a complete disaster: there's three main operators with different ticketing schemes (so an "all day" McGill's ticket isn't valid on First Bus, etc), most of the routes wind up being really inefficient, real-time tracking is non-existent. I refuse to use them unless I absolutely have to.

And this is why I ended up getting a bicycle. I can get to places faster than buses, it's free, I don't have to deal with tickets, and I'm not bound to fixed schedules. When I'm done shopping I can just jump on and ride home, rather than having to wait an indefinite amount of time for a bus that'll most likely be late.

One of the journeys I make pretty often is to Braehead (an out-of-town retail park about 7 miles / 11km away). It takes me about 45 minutes to cycle there. In theory, one of the express bus services can do it in 20 minutes. In practice, it'll take me 10 minutes to walk to the bus station, then I'll have to get on the appropriate bus and wait for it to leave. The last time I tried taking a bus there, the first bus I tried to take had a notice posted that it wasn't going to stop at Braehead (even though it was scheduled to do so) so I had to wait another 15 minutes for a different one. Welp, there's the time advantage gone.
