For the longest time I've had a cheap USB optical mouse plugged into a USB->PS/2 adapter, and it's had some accuracy problems. The cursor occasionally jitters, and if left alone will gradually make its way to the left of the screen. I figured it was just a crappy mouse, but today I got a nice new one. For some reason it doesn't work with the adapter, so it's plugged into a USB port instead. It has the same problem! Except where the old one would shake a little and slowly wander to the left, this one shakes like mad and bounces and jumps over to the left and back again. It doesn't seem to have any problems when I'm actually moving it, but it moves on its own. WTF?

Is it an optical mouse? If so, what type of surface are you using?

My mouse (plain USB mouse from IBM, optical 3-button with scrollwheel) does that sometimes (shake a bit and move slowly to the left), but moving it myself always fixes it, so it never annoyed me ... even though previous ones I've had never did this

Yep, and a plain black mouse pad made of some sort of fabric.

Well it's incredibly annoying when you're trying to move or draw something or watch a movie and the mouse suddenly flies across the screen.

Take it off a mouse pad and put it on a hard surface. If a little piece of fluff/hair gets underneath the laser, it will go all insane and bounce all over.

Is it an old Microsoft USB mouse?

The ones here at the office do that too, occasionally. Could just be a mouse fault.

This is a new Microsoft USB mouse. The old one was a USB mouse of some generic Taiwanese brand (but connected to the PS/2 port).

Check your physical setup for nearby electrical objects. Mouse issues have long been a secret effect of EMI.

The ones we had at CCSN were like that sometimes, depending on where they were left. It was usually resolved by just moving the mouse to another point somewhere.

Try using a different mousepad or not using one at all. That tended to fix the problem.

Optical mice need surfaces that don't reflect light back at itself, try a new mousepad.

This one's solid black. It might actually have fixed itself, hasn't happened in a few hours now. I doubt it's EMI since I moved into another room and it's still happening.

Maybe I'll leave it off the mousepad overnight and see if it's still in the same place I left it in the morning.

[edit] That double-post rule ever going to be fixed?

Anyway, looks like it was the mousepad. I haven't been using it lately and it's behaved. Odd, I used that mousepad for ages with a few mice, and that one didn't have any problems at first...
