Do you use any smart home stuff? I've started trying some of it out; right now I have a (mostly quiet) Echo Dot from Amazon in the bedroom, which is largely just so I can be even lazier with the pair of Hue lights I got; being able to say "Echo, turn the master bedroom lights off" before bed is useful.

I've had a Nest for a few years now but don't get to use it very often, though. It's been neat setting up something to record its sensors and see how things go.

I continue to have nothing smart-home-esque at all. As much as I'd love to have something, most stuff has a call-to-home so I'd rather build it myself so I don't send analytics anywhere. Sadly, that's time I don't really have a lot of.

You know it's not often I know what a link's gonna be before I click on it, but...

Currently the smartest thing I have right now is a Chromecast, which barely counts. I've wanted some Hue lights or a Google Home for a while, but I dunno if the cost would justify how much I'd actually use the damn things.

No in home smart tech but we do have some outdoor stuff. After hearing that some packages were being stolen from doorsteps in our neighborhood, we got a Ring doorbell kit that came with the video doorbell and a stick up security camera. It's really nice to have because we can see our entire driveway leading up to the entrance way and the entire door area itself. You can speak to people right from your smartphone even if you aren't home. So far, nothing nefarious has happened thankfully. Although we did have a wasp nest nearby that kept setting off the driveway stick up camera. Had that taken care off immediately.

During the installation process, I discovered a little bit about doorbells. Older homes (pre-2000s) used lower voltage transformers for doorbells. So I had to google where they are typically installed, find ours, go to the hardware store and buy a higher voltage one so that the doorbell was powered rather than running on battery. The stick up camera uses a solar panel to stay charged.

The only "smart" device we have is our TV... it's kind of a mixed bag, but I will give it credit for running Netflix better than my PS4 does. Neither my wife or I really have much interest in a home device like Echo, since we don't really subscribe to any music streaming services (yet) and the light in the room we use the most has a remote anyway if one of us is really lazy.

The only smart device I own is a smartphone, and I honestly don't even want that at times.

I feel like a lot of the stuff that is offered by these things is not really worth much, let alone the charging price of the products. But then, the biggest reasons for me to never get anything is security concerns.

I find we're limited in what we can use because we rent an apartment, we don't own a house; so things like hard-wiring up a doorbell is totally out of the question for us, and in fact our apartment didn't even have a doorbell. I ended up buying a stick-on one for fairly cheap and it barks when you press it

Security concerns

Speaking from experience, if you buy actual name-brand quality shit, the chances of it running as a botnet are actually pretty small, even if you have to update stuff occasionally. If you buy cheap no-name garbage from China then, well.

Also, how about planned obsolescence? I utterly dislike the idea that those fancypants smart devices can become useless if the vendor decides to pull the plug. Regular devices also get discontinued but atleast they continue working until internal failure.

Eh, I've been following Internet of Shit on Twitter for too long to get excited about smart home devices. I'll be passing on them for the foreseeable future. I can see the use in having smart lights, but I'll be damned if I get to a point where I can't use my own lights because of a firmware update :V

Though it doesn't actually count since I didn't (nor plan to) enable the "smart" feature (read: wireless control from phone).

Speaking of Dyson, have you seen their TV commercials? They're full of nonsense technobabble. "Numeric engine" and whatnot. I don't see how an engine can be 'numeric' or how that concept can apply to engines.

What I'd like to know is... why does ANYONE need a fridge that has a tablet integrated on the door so you can see what's inside without opening the door? Seriously, is opening a refrigerator door that much of a hassle for the average bloke? I'm... I'm confused.

That one is just dumb, but having a tablet on the fridge isn't all bad. We use ours to keep track of when some stuff expires or what we need to buy.

Though in this case the tablet is actually a whiteboard.

Blackboards are chalky and kind of frustrating to write on if you get the chalk dust on your hands... Even when I started school they'd already migrated to using dry-erase boards entirely.


Now, we don't use ours very well either. It's one of those things I try to get a handle on but it never works
