Needless to say, that's... not quite right.

It turns out that there's code to put in the first post of a thread into the meta description tag, but the availability of that was checked by filter_bool(), which... filtered it to a bool, which prints as 1. Oops.

Now it just (properly) checks if it's set.

I was like "I know that worked when I originally programmed it" ...

You doof.

In more serious note with the thread subscribing, would it be possible to have those notifications implemented on the website rather than emails? For example, at the top of the website between your private messages and the forums. Considering it already shows PMs, birthdays, new users etc.

What about a tag to collapse/hide things? Though I'm not sure if it already exists as I haven't seen anyone using such a thing. Besides helping keep things uncluttered and compact by letting you hide massive/many images, if it's possible to prevent any images inside from loading until expanded it'd also be useful for fellows on slow internet.

That feature sort of already exists; it's the "Favorites" feature. Threads have an "add to favorites" link as well. You have to go to that to see it, though, and I don't know how useful it will be to add a "new" there for every page load...

The idea was more to let people know when a (possibly slow-moving) thread updated.

I don't think dynamic image loading is in the cards at all. There's a possibility for something like spoiler tags but larger, maybe? I do something similar with my tilde.town page.

Speaking of spoilers, I've been debating changing them from the way they are now (small font, black box with "spoiler") to a more inline one. I don't know how much stuff it'd break, though.

It actually still exists in BMF's bio:

The graphic itself comes from an old Trillian theme called "Microscopic", I think; but that theme is at least 14 years old now...

This is a dangerous avenue.

I'm on a few boards where spoilers work that way, and people tend to use them to magically compress shit. A prime example is huge images in spoilers, that end up stretching everything offscreen when you open then. Or people abusing them to put a whole wall of idiocy in their signature.

My board had them too for a while. The first attempts I made against that were silly things like "no more than X spoilers per post" or "no spoilers in signatures". But I found a way that's way better: keeping the spoilers unlimited but making them always take space even when hidden.

Oh wow. I never knew this was already implemented... I guess I always overlooked that small button, heh. What I was thinking of was having a small block on the main forum front page with links to your Favorites / Subscribed posts whenever they're updated.

Less clicks for someone to see if X has new stuff in it.

Does the New - icon pop up next to Favorites if any of those posts are updated?

No, but what you can do is similar to what I do elsewhere; bookmark that page and start browsing from there.

Poll editing.

More seriously, I like the features we do have, and I appreciate all the work that has been done so far.

I would like to echo requests for additional themes and perhaps even ranks to be added in, though. The old themes and ranks are very nostalgic, but nostalgia aside, they have always been some of my favorite little features of the board, and it would be nice to see them utilized more.

If you want to make some rank images, be my guest, they're pretty simple to add (relatively speaking). Themes are easy-ish too, I just don't have many of them any more.

Poll editing has been one of those missing features for over a decade now, I think adding it at this point would invite some sort of curse

An idea to prevent abuse with poll editing would be to delete all votes when a poll is edited. Maybe you can get away with only doing it if the existing options are altered/removed.

But then that can be abused too.

Re: spoilers, you could do a "click to expand" box, but using a checkbox and CSS trickery so it doesn't rely on scripts.

Email notification and/or RSS feeds would be nice.

You're telling the person who invented that trick. In fact, I even linked to it:

New mobile layout is perfect. Maintains that acmlm sensibility without sacrificing my ability to pick which page of a thread I want to go to.

I think the page-chooser could use some work; it'd be possible to have it show the first page, last 3 pages, and the 3 pages around where you are now, or any other configuration. Having them all there all the time is a little weird. Something like

Jul - General Chat - This isn't a real thread (yet)

Page: « First - < Prev - 5 of 14 - Next > - Last »

Jump to page:

The dropdown would show every page, but the text version would only show the current page, previous and next, and first and last. The links could also be enlarged a little to make tapping them easier.

The only issue is that the dropdown could get really, really long for certain threads, and I'd like to keep a JS-free implementation...
