I can't tell if people are using that photobucket bandwidth image ironically in this thread or not.

Days Like this, I'm glad I never signed-up for it
If I need to host files of any kind, I can always use the Crystalien Redux server, since I'm authorized to do that.

My layout images are all hosted on github, because my layout was forked from a project of mine there

And yeah, it is kinda hard to tell if people are using that bandwidth image ironically. Either way, it does help to ruin PB's PR for making these changes, so let's hope that nasty thing shows-up EVERYWHERE (:<

Using my own host really worked out for me...

(Actually it was working really well, I just happened to see this post at a time when I have my hosting shut off for various reason. Likely in a month this post won't make sense anymore.)

I have my own cheapo hosting as well (both on HostGator and tilde.town) but I'm usually too lazy to use either one just for uploading random throwaway images.

My post layout images are also hosted on my university account, which apparently still exists.

I used to have a simple image uploader ( ) that would let me dump random shit onto one of my various websites but I forgot it and I should probably set it up again.

I wonder if there's any good shit for doing that these days

I dunno why image hosts have to be such obnoxious turds when the bandwidth bills get too high. I'd much rather they just start serving 404s and let images break than start spamming ads for a service no one in their right mind is actually going to sign up for.

You obviously know better than I do but legit be careful of that and don't store anything there that you'd be afraid to lose. One day they might see you are no longer a student and just pull the plug without warning.

If I still had a reason to keep a domain name and a website, I would. FFAlexandria was nothing more than a splash page filled with my hopes and dreams of being a popular Final Fantasy website.

I'll get all my images up on imgur sometime soon.

My reason is that it's cheap. $96 for a year of hosting with DreamHost, domain included. Could probably find stuff for even cheaper if you wanted.

Hell, a bargain-bin VPS from DigitalOcean would probably run you even less, you'd just have to get a domain from somewhere.

Every image host is doomed to become shit. It's not profitable to host images and not fuck with redirects to shove ads in everywhere. Imgur works for now but they've been pulling a lot of dumb shit lately, I doubt it's long before they go the same route.

That's what I fear, as well. Imgur has never been profitable as a company, same as Reddit and the likes. Once they go under, what happens to all your images and history? Same goes for all social media. I read an article that mentioned future generations may have decades or centuries of lost information due to digital media. Once a server shuts down, you may never get your photos or files back. There are efforts to make archives and continue them, such as the library of congress, the internet archive, etc. But that's not everything.

All that's on there is shitty old homework assignments and a few images that I mostly don't remember the purpose of. Certainly nothing of value.

KLayout 4.0
oh well, at least I still have everything backed up elsewhere in case shit happens (and it's moved to imgur while the fun there lasts)

also, for whatever reason, the photobucket "BUY SUBSCRIPTION NOW!!!" message only showed up for the background image in my layout. the minicon and the avatar actually survived.

and I guess this counts as an excuse to change avatars, right?

Hey look, I fixed it! I hate that imgur changes file names. I get why as it wasn't really intended to be this type of image host. I had to upload 11 images and then copy the url, find and replace the old photobucket url, etc.

The filename changing is shitty, but at least it's not like tinypic and "oops we replaced your image with something horrible" thanks to reusing them.

There's always the comedy option of allowing image uploads here

Any way we could just get a Jul or TCRF image host? I'm sure there exists a simple open source PHP image host that's simple to set up and it wouldn't be that hard to put it behind a Jul login wall. Then people could use that (and be encouraged to do so) and we'll never run into these issues again!

At least I have backup copies of everything on third-party hosts that I care about. Link rot is a big problem though. Especially when you get jerks like Dropbox who create it on purpose.
