Today is my 16th anniversary of joining Acmlm's Board. Technically it was around 9:30 PM Pacific time, but no matter.

It sure has been a journey, hasn't it...

You've been doing forums for 16 years? Wow, that's a long time. And I saw a post made by you on the Earthdrake forums in the landfill and in it you said Acmlm's board software has been around since 1997 even though most of the forums say 2000-insert year here. Is that true or no?

Ah damn, I missed my equivalent then

It's been a long time, and a lot of things have happened... sometimes I wish I could go back to those early days and do things differently, but I guess that's normal.

The administration (as well as a few users) have decided that you're creepy/weird enough that it's time to activate the sploded clause.

congratz!

and ugh, I too, tend to forget many such dates. I never really log them anywhere, either

We all have things we want to do differently if we could. In my case, however, I wonder if that'd drastically alter the course my life has taken to this day. Everything that's happened, good and bad, has shaped who I am, what I've done, what I believe in, and most likely steered me to sites like this. Long story short, yes, it's quite normal.

My 14th is coming up sometime in December. (Sadly, I was lost with the first crash, so not sure when exactly I joined)

It's so weird to think I've been in this community in various forms over half my life. And to think, I still vividly remember wondering why I had to be 13 for a lot of things.

Time is scary.

Congratz

Not so much for half my life, but I can relate to that somewhat. More so with my current programming/hacking projects, because I never thought that I'd be working on some of these things. (or even programming, for that matter) It's strange... I still can't get over how all those pieces seem to have just fallen into place, and I became involved with all these things and people that I now am.

The no BS answer: because a bunch of morons who think they understand the internet imposed unenforceable and uneconomic regulations upon it, and then the illusion called "statistics" brainwashed the public into believing their claims. Forbes actually has an article concerning COPPA. (i assume that's what you meant? since it's the law that tries and fails so hard to keep < 13 yo's off the internet, or to protect them) Touches more on the outrageous burden, but it mentions briefly (all the way at the end) the benefits of such policies are questionable, at best. I know from experience they can cause great harm, as well. (like when you cannot do anything to help your 'underage' friend who's being picked-on or abused) //end off topic thing

16 years of you joining AcmlmBoard feels weird to me because...I am 16. That makes me feel very out of place here.

I'm sure a lot of crazy things must've happened since then, even though I wasn't really there to witness it, but I do wonder where would be a lot of the people from those times.

Someone joined the forums when they were like, 9 or something, and were still really mature. But that's pretty funny to think about, that we have members here that are younger than the forum itself.

Age is but a number and simply cannot measure maturity. At most, it can be used to set/measure an average, but there will be edge-cases like the one you have described. An interesting point someone I used to know once made concerns the drinking age in concerns to being in the military. Basically, if you're old enough to go to war and kill someone, you're old enough to drink. I kinda have to agree...

I don't think that's too strange, it's probably normal. I honestly don't give this too much thought, myself! lol

Wow, I've been around Acmlmboards for about the same amount of time. Crazy to think that, but also kind of cool when you think about where we'll be in the future.

And there were some of us that joined when they were 15 but never acted liked it. Using forums still makes me feel younger, or maybe it was always the atmosphere at Acmlm and other early forums. It's like going to a toy store and wanting to play with everything.

I remember the day Acmlm opened his board. It originally used .dat files to store users and posts instead of mysql. Funny to think 16-17 years later I would still be using SQL in my career, mostly things I learned from trying to adapt my own Acmlm board and website.

I remember asking to see what those files looked like, long after the board had moved to MySQL.

And yeah, I still use it, too. Old habits die hard.

I actually have a copy of Acmlm's board when it used .dat files which is Acmlm's board 0.7 and you can still download that particular version from my website accessible from my profile.

Vagla is the one dude I wish I could locate again. He was cool. And I miss Yoshi Dude.

I was on Challenge Games Communities' AB before the main AB. Probably somewhere in 2001-2003 myself.

The internet has... changed. lol

Vagla is still around, if you know where to look. I don't, but I know someone who does. I remember back when they were making Mega Man Vengeance, it was a neat little homebrew. RIP Dragon Eye Studios.

I agree, though, things have ... certainly changed. A lot of the history in the past, and the battles that were fought, feel so... petty, now. We were all so different.

Dragon Eye Studios! I was thinking it was Red Eye Studios or something, haha.

Chances are he's probably forgotten about me.

16 some years later and I still think Super Mario Bros 3 Challenge is the only romhack I ever really put a lot of time into. Had some fun with Metroid and Mega Man editing though. But it's weird how this got me into AB's, then the idea of editing Link to the Past or Super Metroid seemed like a pipe dream... and then I instantly realized I had no patience for doing it myself. lol, I was never a fan of how most people just made ultra hard romhacks too.

EDIT: The fact that I've been registered on Jul for 10 years alone is... WTF

Yoshi Dude, that's a name I haven't heard in some time. I think she's how I even found out about acmlm (Don't bother looking, I never signed up), when she showed up to this forum I went to and already knew everybody.
