Hello,

I'm having problems connecting my Wii to the internet, I had a modem but last week I changed it and now I have a USB adapter that receives the internet connection from Sprint. I can't connect that to the Wii, so the only way I can think of to connect the Wii to the internet would be enabling an Access Point in my laptop so I can connect to it from the Wii.

I tried google, Yahoo! Answers and asked in GaiaOnline and have yet to find an answer. I also got a wireless router in case it is needed. I'm using Windows XP Home, and I have a separate Windows 2000 Professional. I can't even "share" the connection from my laptop to the Windows 2000.

The malls are packed, so a way to connect my Wii to the internet without having to go to Radio Shack and buy extra hardware would be appreciated.

Hmmmmm...

Your problem is a wireless router, not the USB thingy, must connect to your internet first. I've tried this kind of sharing before, and the problem is it only usually works from computer to computer.

You'll need to try to connect your wireless router to your main connection. Then manually set the Wii to the right DNS/IP/whatever settings (The automatic settings thing on it is garbage), and then open up the right ports for it to access the internet, and THEN it should work.

How does the weird USB thingy connect you to the internet? Is it a wireless device picking up wireless service or some sort of weird phone cable device or something else?

That thingy's a wireless phone based dealie. You're going to need another USB thingy, like, a USB Wireless B/G card in this case set to send out the connection. I wish there was a way without it, but as I said, save that, you can only share connections between computers. The Wii does not understand Windows connection sharing.

No wonder why nobody answered you correctly, as those are rather new. I've been eying one myself... isn't it expensive to use?

Anyway. You'll need a wireless USB access point with that thing. Unless your router posesses some advanced features I don't understand, but then you should look through its documentation for ways to use a computer as the source of the connection... that's not how they usually work though. NAT and all.

You want your laptop to act as a wireless access point? Sorry, I tried to do that once and discovered it's basically impossible under Windows. I don't understand why, exactly.

You could run a Linux live CD and do it there while you play Wii, but that's not easy.

Hmm, I'm starting to think I need the Nintendo USB WiFi LAN adapter or however it's called. Even though I have a router, I tried connecting it to my laptop with an ethernet cable and it didn't received the connection from the USB aircard thing. I tried to bridge the connections and it doesn't works either.

Sorry, I'm new to many of Windows networking functions.

You need that or another USB-style access point, like I said. Routers require the raw connection. They aren't made (normally) to take the computer's connection; NAT is about hiding all your stuff behind one IP, and using one computer's connection to do that is counter-intuitive.

Basically, you need a USB-based WAP that'll share your computer's connection with everything else.

I'm going to buy the Nintendo USB WiFi LAN adapter thing tomorrow since stores aren't opened today. I just hope it works so I don't waste my money.

Make sure to get the Wifi one. The LAN one simply allows you to connect it to the network via a cable, and since your Router won't take one, I doubt your Nintendo Wii will either.

The wireless one, on the other hand, is catered to your situation.
