It fell off the grid somewhere during my moves in June and I haven't been able to find it since, but I'm 90% certain I didn't leave it somewhere...

Eyeballing it, I'd say roughly three hours across everything in 2016.

I did not use my 3DS very much this year.

When it comes to overall 3DS game usage, this image is still fairly accurate for the top third of it, apart from New Leaf's Welcome Amiibo update adding 50 hours (with more to come!). I forget how old it is, but you can see MH Generations only had 144 hours back then...

As for specifically this year...

The number of hours I put into my 3DS in 2016 doesn't exceed 120 hours. Better than the 60 hours I played in 2015 I guess. My 3DS mostly just collects dust now. That's due to the fact that most 3DS games really aren't catching my eye and my time is so limited now. I can't game like I used to.

The only game I was hyped for in 2016 was Zero Time Dilemma. That game turned out to be a huge letdown. Didn't match the hype there was for it at pre-release. It was a lesson in 1) to never be hyped for the release of a game and 2) a good game (series) doesn't need sequels.

TL;DR
2016 - 120 hours played
My hopes were dashed.

I hadn't realized how little 3DS I played last year... exactly a minute short of 62 hours. And even the individual titles drop off in time played very quickly:
