The training course will be teaching me Core and Enterprise Java, OOP and Continuous Integration, and then you can pick a speciality. I'm going to opt for Software Development, so that'll be .NET, Scala and Xamarin. I imagine I'd then be shipped off to whatever client is better suited for my speciality, so I should end up doing C#, Java and Scala.
I think what I'll actually be doing is developing applications to be deployed at client sites, and also teaching them how to use the application, and probably just being on site should anything happen and a new version needs to be deployed.

Dell is stupid. The laptop I have does not have a locking latch for the keyboard backlight ribbon cable, so I can't have a backlit keyboard all because someone at the factory probably snapped it off or left it off because it wasn't meant to have a backlit keyboard to begin with, except the connector is still there, taunting me.

glue the ribbon cable in place
in related news, I just installed ASUS's ATKACPI driver, and my laptop's keyboard backlight still works
except
the driver's code is as good as that of the ASUS driver website. that is, absolute fucking lagtastic crap.
using function keys brings up some dumb OSD graphics that lags.
atleast the screen backlight keys seem to still work normally, but the keyboard backlight keys get awful lag for no reason.
I'm tempted to reverse-engineer the damn thing, find out what it hooks to detect those keys and which ports/registers it writes to, and make my own driver that isn't a steaming pile of laggy crap. ____________________ Kuribo64 -- NSMB2 hacking and other crap |

Finally got RSS feeds working in uTorrent... and holy shit, why have I not done this sooner? Now I just gotta figure out a way for it to automatically extract torrents for Plex to pick them up.

I'm at Free Play Florida and someone brought a LaserActive. Totally had to pick my jaw up off the floor.

Turns out that job was a load of crap. Lots of reviews from existing employees talking about substandard training, no support at client sites, barely meeting the living wage if you get placed in London, having a week to move across the country. Decided to drop out before I got locked in the contract, so unfortunately, I've done nothing of those.
As for what I've done previously, I love C# and I'm definitely glad I picked that as my first language to learn. It's very powerful and very easy to learn.
As for Java, I've only done it in Android programming, and the Android API is pretty shitty at times. I'm also not terribly fond of Java itself.
Scala, I haven't touched much, but I do have a friend who enjoys it and it's definitely something I need to pick up.

Pretty good that you were able to get the real scoop on the job before you were sucked in. It can be tough to make those type of decisions before deadlines.
I always enjoy listening to people's experience (good or bad) with different programming languages. Just a general interest since it helps paint a picture about said languages. If I had an infinite amount of time, learning more languages would be one of my preoccupations since knowing more languages can allow you to do more things.

<+Flygon> From what I gather
<+Flygon> He claims the subject is a Government coder
<+Flygon> And needs to learn Game Boy hacking?
<+roxahris> The codes!
<+roxahris> The cooooodes!
<@Sanqui> yes
<+Flygon> ...this raises more questions than it answers
<+Souzooka> Maybe it's just code for Great Britain hacking
<+roxahris> I think you're onto something
<+BlastProcessing> maybe the prime minister has to enter the nuclear codes on a gameboy
<+BlastProcessing> MAD was averted because nobody could fnd the Link Cable
<@vaguerant> I thought MAD was averted by nobody watching. ____________________ In our brief lives, • we've managed to meet. • Treasure this gift, • this precious time that we have. |

The more I see gameplay footage of Wand of Gamelon and Faces of Evil, the more it makes me want to see someone try to recreate the games using Link to the Past's engine, or a recreation of it. Of course, it would need a lot of creative liberties taken with it to make it any good, but I'd still play it.

I might be able to shove a 1050Ti into my crusty old Dell Studio XPS 8000. It'll be throttled because of the lower PCIe version my motherboard has but it should be an improvement (and I can finally run Planet Coaster)

Now that it's been two-ish weeks, any luck? My uncle tried cramming a new GPU in his pre-built computer (might've also been a Dell?) and the motherboard totally rejected it, it wouldn't even POST.
Also, guess who got a cold as a Christmas present!

Johnny Rockets is probably the worst dining experience I ever had because I couldn't remember how the food tasted due to the incessant floor shows every half hour while I was trying to eat.

I'm mentally preparing myself for the insane amount of travel I have to do shortly. Next week, I'm down to Sheffield for an interview with Sumo Digital, and that's about half a country away. Then the week after that, I'm down to Portsmouth for an interview with Climax Studios which is almost an entire country away. 6 hours on a train, so I'm having to come down the day before the interview and stay at a Holiday Inn for a night. Upside of that is I get to find the place before my interview, so I can't get lost on the way there.
