How do we not have a thread for this game already?

Have you played it? Do you want to play it but haven't yet? Who's your favorite character? Favorite Mettaton Moment™? Favorite music track?

I love the game so much and everything about it. I would be lying if I said I haven't listened to Bonetrousle for over 7 hours straight on more than one occasion.

Modified the thread title just to be safe. Let me know if you'd rather the thread be spoiler-free and open to everyone (though it would limit discussion pretty severely).

Oh, good idea. Just to be safe, the spoileriest of spoilers should probably still be marked as spoilers.

I just finished it, to the best of my knowledge, completely.

The spoiler tags here are going to become a pain in the ass...

Also I'm still loaded with bicycles. Bikes.

Oh, and the Chrono Trigger influences were wonderful. Hearing MIDI samples from CT was a real treat.

Oh again, the amount of details this game has is NUTS

Oh again again, as Delpolo told me on IRC, there are phone calls for nearly every single room.

Oh again again again, this game has really gotten under my skin. I read through Giant Bomb's Austin Walker's review of the game, and his review makes so much sense now. One commenter writes:

It's not just this one trick that the game does, or its subversions of JRPGs. You can't understand why it's a 5 star game from a review. You would have to play it and you'd have to "get" its style. It's a very, very personal game, and the people that won't get it will hate it.

But for me, it's probably one of my favorite games this year. If not my favorite.

And I couldn't agree more. I was ready (and already in the process) of writing off people's opinions on "Undertale is the best!" but I understand where they're coming from now.

It really is a personal experience and there isn't anything really quite like it, even if it doesn't have Pequod.

I've completed a pacifist run, and I really really REALLY enjoy this game a lot for so cleverly breaking a ton of the "rules" that games should follow.

I'm slowly working on a genocide run, but dunno if I will complete because dear lord I am near the end and I am having quite a bad time.

Definitely looking to be my GOTY right now, just, such an impressive experience.

Man, after seeing Joel go through the game I am just dying to play Undertale, even if I have some things already spoiled to me. Game just has a lot of heart.

Also probably relate to this certain part with Alphy more than is probably healthy.

I looked at some gameplay footage of a genocide run cause I wouldn't have the heart to do it myself (if I ever do out of completeness, I know I will feel really bad about it), the game give you so many chances for redemption

Usually a name like Genocide run would bother me, but it's basically is suitable for what you're doing in a such run this time (geno means race/tribe).

I've lost count of how many blind let's plays I've watched, but now that Markiplier is playing the game, I'll be watching that too. I love seeing how people react to everything, like the talking rocks in the Ruins. I love this game.

I feel like the genocide path is the worst part of the game, at least until the very end. Then again, I guess given I did a pacifist route first and grew to love the characters it colors my perception.

I have absolutely no interest in a genocide run, or killing anything for that matter. Considering how bad I felt when I replayed it and at the end, I think a genocide run would just ruin me.

I did a genocide run.

Winded up doing a second pacifist run to see how the game reacts to my past actions

It's a bad thing you got so far.

It's a good thing because that's just a kick in the dick.

As a whole, I just feel like the Drakengard series did the 'ramifications of using violence to solve your problems' theme a little better, though Undertale sure contains some emotional gut-punches.

I can't stop thinking about how the music for Waterfall is...

I went through the rest of the soundtrack and messed with the speed to see if I noticed anything else. (I didn't.)

played the game a couple months back. did the pacifist run. i think i ended up crying more times than PMD:RRT ever did.

don't really have any plans to do a genocide run anytime soon, mostly because i've grown too attached to the cast that killing them off would hurt me incredibly hard and

not entirely sure if i'd consider it the end-all game of all time, but it definitely shoots up as GOTY for me.

I imagine it's not much more than "hey here's a musical motif that ties a lot of tracks together to make the final product more cohesive"

It's funny as using a Leitmotif this much isn't too uncommon for a game or movie (see a game like Yoshi Story which reuses the same short melody in various ways A LOT), but Undertale manages to at least mix it up in various creative ways.

The way the game uses sampling works really well to invoke emotions as well. The songs that samples Earthbound probably gave chills to Earthbound fans in particular.

Speaking of sampling, I was watching Lauren the Flute's playthrough and, having just finished playing EarthBound, she pointed out some of the sounds and instruments are from EarthBound. Specifically, the "Ghost Battle" theme uses Venus's voice, and another sound is Buzz Buzz's buzzing slowed down.

(By the way, I recommend watching her playthrough, if only because of how much joy she expresses from playing the game.)
