While poking around Utsurun Desu, I found things I haven't seen before, and I've played through the game a few times:

Some kind of large Arabian man or miner.

Some kid with some kind of stick or bat. Supposed to fall over.

A font for the word "WARNING". Perhaps for bosses or a poster?

Some kind of magical girl or Chinese-looking girl who fires something down at you?

Some kind of robotic cat thing that shoots missiles! Likely a boss? (See below)

A portrait of a cat to speak some dialogue, perhaps for the above?

How about, if you have an EU SNES, go on the Console Select menu of SMAS, and shake the cartridge around?

Sometimes it makes the yoshi sound from SMW. Although the sound file isn't present in the files - I don't think - somehow the 'hup-hurrp' (or whatever the fuck it is) makes present.

I'm almost sure that it is cartridge tilting, and the fact it creates a Yoshi sound is a coincidence. Maybe it could mean that some remnants of Super Mario All-Stars + World that are in the original cartridge too, but I doubt it, specially considering that there's a 1MB difference between the ROMs of SMAS and SMAS+World.

I mean cartridge tilting, I worded it wrong.

Is you cart a SMAS one, or a SMAS+SMW one? And did it *sound* like the SMW yoshi sound, or *was it* the SMW yoshi sound?

Super Mario All-Stars original cart (European version)
It's a Yoshi sound, yes.

I noticed it about 2 years ago.

Super Mario All-Stars uses an updated version of Super Mario World's music engine. Most of the sound effects were ported from SMW, but several of them are unused. Yoshi's sound is indeed one of them.

Why is it loaded in with the game select screen though?
And I never saw it on the wiki, I don't think (might go on Netscape or another browser later)

Maybe all sounds are loaded everywhere?

I don't think it is on the wiki.

The SMW sounds are always loaded because all games share the same set of sound effects. In fact, a lot of SNES games rarely or never upload new data to the SPC, since it's a fairly slow process.

The sound is mentioned on the SMAS page, it just hasn't been uploaded yet (and I'm not sure it really needs to be, since they're ordinary SMW sound effects).

Based on a hunch (and some quick checking with someone who does DS stuff) that's likely just a feature of the DS's graphical capabilities and not anything unused. Sort of like turning on halfbright mode on the NES.

Yep, I'm 99% sure this is utterly useless. The DS hardware doesn't even have programmable shaders; it's a very primitive 3D engine.

The post in question mentions two potential values, and their effects: 0x20 to turn on edge marking, and 0x02 to turn on highlight shading.

These values match up perfectly with potential settings for the DS's DISP3DCNT hardware register (documented here by gbatek), so it seems likely to me that this is just the code which sets up that register.

An interesting effect for sure, but not noteworthy as unused content.

It's basically the color registers on the NES, yes. Just something you can toggle on/off by setting a bit somewhere. There's no code that ever enables this normally and there's no special code followed by turning it on.

So is this an unused (and possibly useless) feature of:
A. the DS hardware/OS-type software
B. DS titles
C. Or is it used by some titles?
D. None of the above (please specify)

It's probably what, for example, Sonic Rush uses? There's an outline around Sonic in-game, IIRC...

Yeah, that does look similar.

And I guess the fact that SM64DS "engine" (?) has some sort of switch for this, is not interesting as basically all games using 3D would have a switch for that?
