So I bought this thing at a swap meet:


It came with only the device itself and a (super janky) SD card reader. I looked it up, found a few different "kernel/firmware" things, put those on a 16GB card with some ROMs (FAT32 formatted), but no matter what I put on it, it just hangs at the loading screen.

I dunno if mine is a clone/fake or if I've set something up wrong or what. Anyone know how to make it work?

That and a "couldn't find SD/TF card" message in the same font are all I've seen it do.

IIRC, there's a few things you need to do.

<4GB SD card.
FAT16 Formatted
Determine whether or not it's a legit R4DS (or one of the myriad clones) and install the correct Wood R4 firmware on it. Thankfully there's not too many flavours of firmware that actually matter for it.

Edit: Also, make sure the connectors in the cartridge are clean. They're notorious for getting grubby.

I'm reasonably sure that the 'legit' card is the only one that works with the 'genuine R4 Firmware'.

But beyond that, I honestly can't tell you! I think it's pretty murky, especially as a lot of places just used their labels on the card and the like.

There's an additional chip in the card if it's a fake, I think.
