What the. I'm looking at Yar's Revenge's config files... and...

---
; Set this to true to show debug menus like level select.
; Only works if SkipMenus is false.
;ShowDebugMenus = true

; Set this to true to enable the in-game debug menu
EnableDebug = true

---

I removed the comment from that first one... and got some sort of a menu after trying to load a level. I immediately pressed Alt+F4 to force quit before the game saved, I do -not- want this to mess with my achievements.

Looks like it's showing debug menus.

Har har.

I'm going to see if I can find the non-Steam version of this so I can poke around it without fear of messing up my save game / leaderboard positions.

Edit:
No. No way. NO WAY.

There's two files in the main data folder, right? "flatbundle.fbndl" and "luabundle.fbndl". I figured they were compressed, so I open them up in a text editor just for fun.

I scroll down and everything is uncompressed. flatbundle is a bunch of xml data, and luabundle is uncompiled lua code. What's more, this thing has bits of an earlier version of the script where you're being taught how to use your armor's weaponry. This is ridiculous. How in the hell did this get past QA?!

Not as uncommon as you'd think. Lots of games and applications don't bother compiling them.

Also, this was hiding in the graphics for Galaga in Namco Museum Vol. 1

They each seem to refer to an enemy. From top to bottom:

ザコ - "Zako"

ゴエイ - "Goei"

ボス・ギャラガ - "Boss Galaga"

ヒコウ - "Flight"

I'm curious if the beer in the lobby if unstretched in the Japanese version. Also, it might be worth pointing out the above graphic rip was posted a while ago in the Japanese text translation thread.

I know. I did that under my old account that I forgot how to get back in to.

Oh? I thought they were usually compiled so people couldn't modify them and do stuff. (I figure the programs have checksum protection to make sure nothing is tampered, but... eh.)

I'll work on the non-debuggy things first, then once I'm done with the achievements I'll share the game to one of my idling alts and work on stuff there.

It varies. I've seen a lot of both.

Lua is usually compiled at runtime. It's possible to precompile for speed (or to save memory by removing the compiler), but the improvement is usually so minor as to be not worth it. You also lose some cross-platform capability that way IIRC.

Welp, that debug stuff in Yar's Revenge amounts to a simple stage select. There doesn't seem to be anything else left over, though there are early dialogue and stage stuff left over in the lua files.

And that's it, apparently. Other than the game refusing to give me that single achievement that just won't pop and is driving me insane...

I was trying to do something in Barbie Horse Adventures: Blue Ribbon Race when I noticed something very odd. From about memory address 0x3003800 to 0x3007B00, the first thing the game loads is B00BFACE written in hex and repeated across that entire section of memory. I don't know if it is just the rom I got or if that is what the game normally does.

Sounds like a pretty standard memory clear. Some programs clear to an unusual number like that so that it stands out in debugging. I haven't seen B00BFACE before (devs being a bit goofy), but DEADBEEF is a popular one. (I've also been known to use D06FECE5.) Though, they say ideally all the bytes should be > 0x80, because that's less likely to be interpreted as a valid value if something accidentally reads them, or some such...

Anyway, yeah, just ordinary memory initialization with a less common value.

... except the developers were Blitz Games, and those guys seemed to have a goofy sense of humor about things. I wouldn't be surprised if B00BFACE was used on purpose.

Also the memory region starts at 30038000. 3003 looks like BOOB. So...

But that's me speculating, of course.

so here's a real discovery from the sims 2 ds.
I opened up SoundData.rom in Audacity. (since I have no idea what the hell i'm doing.)
a few clips sounded new. mainly this one that seems to be Emperor Xizzle Dancing. : http://puu.sh/hIR8w/f583debff0.mp3
I've also been looking up the developers 1-by-1 to determine any program that they might have used. still no luck.

Sadly and disappointingly, I noticed that in the Japanese version of MSHvSF, the Mega Man signs in the mall stage are not replaced with Rockman:

The other night, I stumbled on the fact that the Motobug in Sonic Colors has two turrets inside its back. Despite the fact that I ripped and submitted the model to TMR years ago, I never actually looked inside the model. I never would have found it either until BrawlBox shoved it in my face while I was looking at the model's parts. As far as I know, this would have been the only time Motobug has ever done more than collide with things.

_Currently venturing through Gran Turismo 3's audio files, aaaaaand there's a lot of slowed down / pitched down drum samples, guitar notes / slides, and plenty of other instruments that I'm preeeetty sure I've never heard while playing this game. A lot of the samples / loops actually fade out at the end like the Car RPM sounds.

I personally thought the game uses recorded music but it looks like the music is 'live' or this might have been just cut content, currently not sure....

anyway here's some sped up examples:

some sick ass (poorly looped) breaks

some loop that sounds like it came from rob base & dj ez rock's it takes two

another drum loop

a crash sample i swear i've heard before

a 'pad' sound, not sure if it's correctly cleaned since I've never heard it before

two of the menu sounds from the game which are not cut (not sure about the second one)

and some music that plays at the start of a race that was already properly pitched

There's also a piano piece that I'm also sure didn't make it in the game.
