After sitting in development hell for over 14 years. (So old that it was Clyde "Tom Ato" Mandelin's first project.) Aeon Genesis finally managed to finish it.

The game is mostly well known for being the only title to use the VRC7 sound chip, that manages to make the game pull off some insanely high quality audio for the Famicom.

What about gimmick!? IIRC, that one used something for more advanced sound too?

In regards to the game though, is it actually any good on the gameplay side?

Gimmick! used the Sunsoft 5B (a Sunsoft FME-7, effectively) audio chip, and actually not a whole lot of its features. Most NES/Famicom emulators only emulate the Sunsoft 5B to the extent which Gimmick! used, according to nesdev.

Additionally, the 5B's audio hardware was just an AY-3-8910 clone, nowhere near as advanced as the FM used in the VRC7 (though it arguably fit the game's atmosphere better than a more advanced chip would have).
