Surprised this hasn't been reported here yet. On Sept. 18, Scotland will vote for independence from the United Kingdom. I was aware that several Scots wanted British independence, but I never thought it would actually happen.

Some relevant stuff for this election:
Scotland economics facts
Pros and cons of independence
Some one who approves of independence
Cons of independence - UK isn't as rich, basically
A pro-independence rally

Feel free to post any links you come across.

I wasn't aware of this but I am all for a country who wants to be independent. I think it's great for Scotland, but I'm sure it will create conflict later on between Scotland and the UK. Thank you for the heads up!

There are many independence movements that don't make economic sense, but Scotland's isn't one of them, in my opinion. Sure, the separation from the UK and the pound will hurt, but we're not talking about people on the verge of starving to death with no resources and no allies and a farming economy. Scotland will do just fine, just as Finland and Iceland are doing fine.

The Scots and the English (especially Londoners) have very contrasting political affiliations and the Scots are obviously greatly outnumbered so I can see why they would feel that Westminster does not represent them.

Scotland is a nation just like France, Germany, and England are nations. If they want to establish political independence to better represent their own interests, then I can't help but support them. Federations are good for cases like the US where no ethnicity/nation is dominant or united enough (both ideologically and geographically) to be able to form a viable nation state. The UK is basically just a union of two major separate nations (and others), one with significantly more people than the other, and in a democratic system which practically ensures that the smaller nation will not get a strong voice in the government.

So yes, I support Scotland independence.

I am also pro-independence; the Scottish are more left than the British, so it makes no sense that they have to suffer being ruled by people with a different ideology, plus the union is rooted in ancient BS that is as relevant today as how US used to be a colony--that is to say, completely irrelevant to today.

This is why I'd vote "uncertain." (Long story short: If Scotland can declare independence, a lot of other nations are going to go forth with independence).

It's also going to hurt the UK's standing in the world, with loads of separatist movements being especially motivated.

Some more questions and answers about the referendum

Well, it's almost ten hours before the polls open on the referendum. This is going to be interesting to see the result that comes out. Personally, I'm still mixed.

Also, in case you didn't catch it, writers for The Simpsons have dragged out Groundskeeper Willie to endorse Scottish independence.

And just so we're clear: Andy Murray definitely support Scottish independence.

What's Scotland going to do when it runs out of oil?

Hehe ... anyway, the Scots are extremely hyped over this. 100% turnout!? what does that even mean!?

Aha. What. Probably because all the qualified voters (anyone 16 and older) turned up at the polling stations. Jesus, this was really something they were waiting for, weren't they? I'd say most of them will vote "yes", but who knows. Can't wait for the result tonight.

Given that the 3 leaders of the various government parties travelled to Scotland and actually made an effort to convince Scotland that they should remain with England... I'm thinking they're going to vote yes. I'm completely indifferent towards it. I'm not sure what Scotland does for us, or what we do for them.

YouGov exit poll has it at 46% Yes, 54% No.

Will it hold? I'm pretty pessimistic about the odds of a Yes vote.

You know how I said 100% of the voters might have turned up? It's actually closer to 97%. Still, that is a lot of votes. They're currently counting everything up, so it will be a while for the result to be announced.

Calling it now for "No"

Lower than expected turnout in Glasgow where most of the yes vote was supposed to come from ... "No" winning by huge margins everywhere that's been counted so far.

There will be angry people; I really hope the UK government is prepared to calm down the situation tomorrow.

Looks like no. Odds are lots of whining will ensue.

The problem that this whole thing was sorta mismanaged by pro-independence people--especially the bizarre and brain dead plans for the currency stuff.

So, 55.3% of votes are "No", while "Yes" is only 44.7%. Alex Salmond's resigning due to the failure of the independence campaign. Still, there was a decent amount of "Yes" votes, so those people will be pretty upset.

Riots have broken out. From what I understand the British nationalists started harassing those who wanted independence and it escalated from there.

English media has been downplaying this, American media is flat out ignoring it, so thank God for at least Australian media; they're not taking any bullshit with this.

I already personally know one person who can confirm shit is going down. Can anyone else personally confirm that this is indeed happening?

I've heard from someone who is actually from the area that those fights occur all the time and are the result of drunken people from different sports teams ticking eachother off and fighting--a common thing in Glasgow, apparently.

Tidy found 387 warnings and 9 errors! Not all warnings/errors were shown.

URIs must be properly escaped, they must not contain unescaped
characters below U+0021 including the space character and not
above U+007E. Tidy escapes the URI for you as recommended by
HTML 4.01 section B.2.1 and XML 1.0 section 4.2.2. Some user agents
use another algorithm to escape such URIs and some server-sided
scripts depend on that. If you want to depend on that, you must
escape the URI on your own. For more information please refer to
http://www.w3.org/International/O-URL-and-ident.html

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
