I'm not sure if there's already a thread like this, but even if it was one I'd just be bumping an old thread.

Anyway, there has been quite a bit of survey here, on how many people trust news programs and similar stuff, especially here in Italy (with the not-quite-press-freedom). The interesting result is that only a mere 25% or so of people actually trust completely news programs.

For me, it depends on the type of news (and also which news program, however it is not as important as the type of news). For example, if it's anything about politics/"problems in Italy" I don't give my final word until I make a search on the web. Considering all the crap and lies news programs spread about them (especially with all the censorship done on the problems in Italy) my instinct instantly says not to trust anything without other research (even moreso if it's on "Mediaset", known for being property of an infamous politician I don't really need to mention or "Rai", which is a state property). For other things, like sport or general "safe" news it's mostly an okay for me.

Considering all of this, it's no wonder why Italy constantly jumps from "free" to "partly-free" on the "Freedom of the press report". Yikes! And what I said it's not even a small part of the problems. It would take me near forever to do so.

Anyway, do you trust news programs shown in your country?

Interesting. I don't know much about Italy, and I can't say I've ever heard that about its news.

As far as our news goes, I've stopped paying attention to it altogether. Not because it's completely unreliable, but because either the stories they are covering are trivial fluff (I don't care if a football player commits a crime or a celebrity gets drunk), or they waste too much time. In the time they spend saying "this is a preview what's coming up next, stay tuned" they could have easily covered the smaller stories already.

That's why nowadays, I get all my news from the BBC's website. To the point, always timely, and the style of their articles makes it so that you can come in on a developing story at any time and get the full info.

I agree with what peardian said. Most of the news programs here seem to have more focus on celebrities, branding, and/or more "talk show"-esque features than actual news about our government or worldly issues or whatever. Throw the fact that most news shows are on one side of the political spectrum or the other into the mix, and then it gets to a point where "news" about our government most likely is rubbish or taken out of context (for an example, it seems pretty much everyone agrees that Fox News is trash). I'm more likely to go to BBC for my news nowadays.

I don't follow our news what-so-ever. Not only do they not report on what should be reported, the stuff they do cover is often done in a bad manner. :/

The worst part about this is that the freedom of the press and all that jazz about how news is great and needed is something they teach heavily in schools over here, yet, somehow, the press almost never cover certain political aspects. (And that begs the questions of why!) Furthermore, the press only covers stories they think sell, nothing else; Which to be frank, is fucking horrible. ._.

I lost fate in all news media a long time ago.

Freedom of the press, in concept, is a very good thing. The opposite of it is observable in places like China and Russia, where the government has the power to suddenly close down any media outlet (or all of them) for no given reason and force the rest to only broadcast exactly what the government provides, regardless of how truthful it is.

The problem is that, by having freedom on what to say, they also have freedom to make dumb decisions on what to say. Rather than striving to be top reporters of news, they instead try to grab for as much attention as possible, whether it be sensationalizing trivial news or pandering to the audience with unrelated shows.

But the good thing is that, with freedom of the press, higher quality news organizations can exist and compete with them. Part of the reason news channels have to resort to such lousy methods is that probably because they're struggling to compete with online news.

That's another of those problems out there (it's also one of the biggest reasons I've forgotten).

Anyway, what I think ofnot-completely news programs.

A good half-news/half-satire program out there is Striscia la Notizia.

Although it's not completely a news program, when it doesn't do satire on politics/ other things not problematic, it shows problems out there in Italy/ people with not a valid license to work/ fake fortune-tellers etc...

It's mostly about Italy here and usually nothing else.

Even moreso with "Le Iene". Not counting the joke parts, there is much more on illegal stuff happening.

I usually take a different consideration of these respect to news programs, simply because of how different they are (yet, there are news out there).

I don't really trust them that much, but it is about all that I can get other then the internet which I think of basically the same. I do watch them because it is all there is and I need to get caught up on my news. Overall, I trust them somewhat. 2tie got that picture right lol

Been trusting them less and less as time goes on. I mean in general I still 'trust' news programs, but I realize that ratings are the only real priority, so if one were to omit facts here and there, a news story can turn out vastly different than how it actually happened, even if there was no actual lying involved. And given how ratings are considered more important above anything else, and how humans crave information, these programs have to spit out the most news as they possibly can, and completely rely on quantity of news pieces instead of quality.

I have 100% faith in my country's television news. They will always sensationalize trivial issues, ignore large ones, and blatantly lie to appeal to what they think are their core consumers. American news is a joke, whether we're talking about the large meganetworks like Fox News or CNN, or smaller local news channels.

Although I do enjoy watching local news. No matter where you are in the United States, you can be certain that if you turn on the local news, the anchor just doesn't get it, whatever it is.

I agree with most of what is said here. Most television "news" is just one of the many distractions that keep people from being involved in their country's direction. It's essentially celebrities and pop culture packaged for a different group of people. If you want to really know what is going on in the world, you have the internet. There are no commercials there!

I do not watch news all too often. Something is always getting blown out of proportion or getting twisted so that it is appropriate for a specific group of people. I just entertain myself with comedy shows and stuff like that.
