Ya I just got word of this news. It should be noted that the shutdown applies to ALL regions, not just Australia. If you still play Wii and/or DS games online, you better get your last play in.
While it is sad news, I'm not really surprised by this either. It was going to happen sooner or later in my honest opinion. The Wii and DS are consoles of the last generation and it costs money for Nintendo to keep servers for the online portions of those games running. They will probably be reutilized for Wii U and 3DS games instead. I'm not surprised that the online stores will still be operational for the time being. Compared to the former, Nintendo still makes money from them and they will probably last quite a while longer because of that.
I remember when the first online game for the DS was Mario Kart DS. I remember playing that game online so much. Arguably, I played Metroid Prime Hunters online even more. That game was really fun online and was the only reason I played it for so long since the single player mode was garbage in my opinion. Even playing against the CPUs in multiplayer was better than single player mode. I guess that this news means that the game will accumulate a ton of dust after online services shut down.

I am still kind of baffled it was announced in Australia first of all places.
Nintendo of Australia is a useless piece of crap. |

For those who have hardware I don't: Link
Someone's started up a project to get captures of the process DS/Wii games use to connect to servers/etc. |

I'm surprised someone hasn't already done this type of stuff already considering the homebrew scene for each console.
I remember, ages ago, I once set up a wireless card on an old laptop to act as a hotspot. I then used Wireshark to analyze whatever packets were going into and out of the hotspot. After that I played MKDS over it and caught a ton of packets. I simply did it for fun.

Oh boy, it happened again. It's this thread all over again, except it's worse now.
The predictions there came true, at the end. Online gaming is next. Crap.
I never got to connect my Wii to the Wi-Fi, but still, let's think of all the relatively recent games that rely on online features, like some 2012 Wii games. Wonderful.

The problem is not so much the peer-to-peer or peer-to-server in-game protocols the game uses but the initial secure authentication to Nintendo's servers which then provides matchmaking. |

I guess working out the secure authentication would take less time than hacking each game to support custom servers.[/obvious]
I'm really thinking of the DLC available that would disappear. I know WarioWare D.I.Y has been archived but not anything else to my knowledge (like Mario VS Donkey Kong Levels).

With the Wiis that lack online support, this isn't surprising in the least.
Still, should have waited an extra year or two when people actually have the new system to pull the plug on the old online services but I guess if you are losing more money than making you have to make sacrifices somewhere.

It's disappointing, but at the same time, the service has been going on for over eight years. As cpubasic13 mentioned, there is a possibility that this is related to their recent losses. We don't know how many people actually use the services now, compared to when the DS or Wii was in its heyday, and we don't know the cost of operating those services. As much as we'd like it, I don't think we can reasonably expect Nintendo to keep the services going forever.

I'd say it's more to do with GLU Mobile acquiring Gamespy. Nintendo used Gamespy for the Wii/DS online functionality and it's been reported that the second GLU bought it, the rates for hosting multiplayer matchmaking increased by a humongous amount come contract renewal time
So while it's probably related to not wanting to lose money, I think its less in Nintendo's hands unless they wish to splash lots and lots of money. |

Gee, how 'bout that. Nintendo wasn't blowing chunks after all.
While the worst-case scenario is often feasible, we on the 'net don't have to assume it's the case every time. |

Never much cared for GameSpy, but I'm sad that Star Wars Battlefront 2 will likely no longer be a thing. :/
