Another Zelda 64 dream (typical).
So I'm browsing some message board (Jul?), and someone comes up and shows all this stuff that they got recently. Loads of old diskettes and computer hardware. Like, old Macs and magneto-optical drives and stuff. And I was told the disks all had old Zelda 64 stuff, like trailers and screenshots and stuff.
Now, the trailers were really different. They started off in an early Hyrule Field, quickly cutting to a dungeon that resembled the dungeon from that old A+B screen with the Wallmaster. During this, an announcer said "This is the beta! You've never played this before!" in a strange, almost "Don't ya know?!" kind of voice. Was also spoken quite fast.
Actually... the voice was almost the same as the announcer from the '80s NES commercials.
Yeah! It was the voice from this commercial!
Still said in a strange tone of voice though. Like, "This is the beta!"
It was a quite fast paced ad, flipping through the clips as the announcer spoke. I don't remember much clips from it actually.
And there was a variation, with different clips.
It started from an early Lake Hylia. I don't remember much but it looked like the A+B lake. Then it started going through different clips, mostly of outside areas. I think an early Market was shown, that was similar to the A+B market, but with more gray brick walls.
It was the same script, but there was a different announcer.
The exclamation at the beginning was almost news intro-like, with every word being spoken broadly.
This voice was again from a '80s NES commercial. The end of this one.
-------------------------------
So, along with the trailers and screens, there's a whole bunch of unmarked MO disks, of which we don't know the contents. So the original owner tried to get it working, but failed for some reason.
eventually they loaned it over to someone who was more capable, but they failed as well.
For some reason, it was eventually handed to me for the same reason. So I'm now on a street that looks kinda like my street, but with more buildings everywhere. I meet up with this guy who had the collection, and I accepted the collection, with a quite hammy speech which I can't remember
So now I'm in some sort of office that looks like it's out of Half Life. Weird openings in the walls with conveyor belts. Quite strange.
So I get everything set up and start trying to get it working.
Eventually I give up and go do something else.
The next thing I know, I'm walking into a store, and a bunch of people are around me, thinking about it. They were talking about networking. Like getting the voltages and phases correct and stuff.
Then I'm back in the office, working on it. I'm trying to reverse engineer the system that it uses to boot MO disks. Apparently, there's a computer where you actually view the pictures, that's connected by a coaxial network  to a computer with an MO disk reader.
So you put the disk in, boot the computer (which looked a lot like this when booting), then boot the other computer, and it should start.
Apparently, a flatbed scanner also had something to do with it, but I don't remember. I just remember scanning something green.
So after all this, I stick in an MO disk, boot the machines, and to my surprise, a playable Zelda 64 boots up. So I spawn in an early Hyrule Field, just like the ads. You could run around but not much else. There was debug information all over the screen.
There was a HUD but it was just a static overlay.
So I sit there, stunned. I look around, noticing another monitor in the corner which is playing the old trailers for some reason. I smile.
And then I got woken up.
I don't have dreams like this very often. It makes me wonder if we'll find stuff like this. Seems likely. Kinda like how the SNES CD stuff was found. |
