If you look at the posts in the last weeks, you will see the site isn't too terribly active. Any thoughts on activity? I would say posting competitions like the ones that happened a while ago. That could get people interested and more users to actually do something. Thoughts?

I would rather we have somewhat sporadic quality posts than useless spam-fests, personally.

That's been a problem elsewhere, but that can always be stopped.

We once had a whole bunch of users who decided activity was the most important thing.

Most of them burnt out and vanished.

So don't worry too much, since otherwise you're likely to burn yourself out... that and we don't really need a horde of spam posts.

Trust me, I won't burn myself out lol. It takes a while to do that, and I take a few days off and get back to it. Spammy posts are always an issue and something I hate.

You will have to excuse us, we are pretty much all semi-grumpy old forum-goers that no longer want the big and bustling forum activity we used to have.

Generally, as you may have noticed, I was trying in the past (in theory) to maximize useful content and post number. In practice that turned a spam-fest that now is over due to me realizing what I've done.

Also, looking at the wayback machine, you should see how the activity changed here between years. Try looking at 2007 or 2010.

You can see in the stats page how the amount of new posts dropped from 200+ new posts per day until mid 2011, dropped further to more frequent double digit numbers of new posts at the end of 2011, and then having triple digit numbers of new posts become really rare approaching the end of 2012.

2013 is almost all double digit new posts with a few single digits here and there, and 70+ new posts have become rare at that point.

I think there are a few pages that show the activity graphically, which is a nice look into the trend of posting here at Jul.

needs to be a syndrome now for 10+ posts lol

honestly there doesn't need to be a posting competition cause there isn't any reason for it
winning internet points doesn't really hold any value vs holding meaningful conversations

you've just got to left that kind of thing happen naturally

Well, unlike death, this sleep seems to be one that is slowly dissipating.

Hence why forcing post count is sorta redundant. If this were a year ago this thread woulda died with 1 post in it.

Wow, that graph is depressing.

Most of the activity has sputtered to a halt as Real Life™ caught up with more and more members. Nobody really has the time for forums these days, and when they do there are usually other websites they could be using.

It's translated into more IRC activity (as it's easier to chat than it is to write big long word posts), which is fairly active, at least. TCRF has actually been picking up steam as a replacement for Jul, too, so there's that.

Basically, forums are a dying breed, and Jul's time is mostly here. I doubt it'll ever really die (worse than it has, at least) but it's not like nobody saw this coming.

I don't really see forums dying so much as I see their purpose shifting.

As Xkeeper said, most people nowadays are using IRC, Twitter, and other forms of instant communication, which are better suited to random everyday conversation than a big, clunky messageboard. However, I think messageboards are still useful for holding large, ongoing, and/or serious discussions, due to their more permanent nature and better signal/noise ratio. If Jul ends up becoming more of an "archive" than a hub of activity, that's totally fine by me, so long as the community itself continues to thrive (which it clearly is).

Activity is dependent on there being something to talk about. Events that cause discussion bring activity; unfortunately that isn't something that can just be pulled out of thin air.

Also, hi! How's everyone doing?

Actually, here is a genuine question for the Admins that I have pondered about and it is related to this topic. Do you ever delete old users? I'm not talking about someone who gets banned or something. Like let's say a user hasn't been active at all in the past 1000 days. Have you ever gone through and deleted some of those accounts based on inactivity or thought about doing it?

I'm just curious is all.
