The Opportunity rover has been on Mars and operating for ten years.

TEN YEARS. It was meant to run for three months. That's 3,900% longer than it was designed for.

Just.. wow.

It's worth noting that the reason they thought it would last only 90 days is because dust accumulates on the rover's solar panels, blocking its power source. So, how did it last that much longer? It turns out that Mars is windy enough to blow off some of the dust on the solar panels, so it never accumulates so much dust that it runs out of solar power.

Science is definitely amazing. After all, it takes a lot of excellent engineering to get a rover to another planet and keep it collecting data for ten years and counting without being able to fix it if something goes wrong. However, you still sometimes just have to get lucky.

A new shop has opened recently near by, and I'm going right there. :3

They say there's absolutely everything there (and it's quite big, it rivals another shop which is far from home). Let's see how it goes.

EDIT: It went well enough. Still, I'm not forgetting the shop from far away (land).

Shop Zone Act 2

Recently, the bad ol' Newsagent's has changed owner, for the better this time. It's such a lovely place now, the owners seem always happy and there isn't this wierd feel of "evilness" like before. The layout itself hasn't changed much, for better or for worse.

Elderly man must be happy of this, considering they're the "main" customers there for some reason. (SPOILER: They are, everyone is)

Finally, finally did the database normalisation I needed to do. Been putting it of for ages because I'd never done it before. Had a couple of people help me through it, who then pretty much told me to go what I thought was right after achieving 1NF and managed to do it! Still have to do the Entity Relationship Model, but hopefully, that should reflect the normalised form.

Also, whee, strike tomorrow, so I've got a half-day.

Apparently Avast doesn't like it when you compile a cross-compiler.

It only took three failed builds of GCC to figure out what was going on.

If the last couple of major versions mean anything, Avast doesn't really like it when you compile anything. (I have since uninstalled Avast)

Avast is going the way of Norton 360, eh?

*Kak looks at his notebook with Avast and MBAM installed (good thing this kind of stuff is usually reserved to my VMs)

I've had Avast actually prevent my computer from booting. To this day, I have no idea how it managed that or why it would even do such a thing, but stopping Avast from launching at startup was the only solution. I now swear by MSE.

The only thing Avast has ever really done for me is block MMF games made by my friend and nuke the Luigi's Mansion ripping tools. So yeah, not installing it on the new computer. MBAM is all I really need, I think.

Avast actually stopped a pile of crap from running when an idiot gave me a link to what he thought was a game. Surprisingly, the actual pile of crap is harmless barring a toolbar install, but still.

I have said this many times, but it's always worth it:

This is why VMs are very useful (especially if the VM folder is inside the exclusions list).

Yes, I am going to start running a VM soon (for documenting STALKER builds, since 1098 doesn't want to work on 7) and that's probably one of the few things I'm going to do.

A good exception folder; Steam.

The last time I checked, virtual machines had serious trouble with 3D acceleration.

As long as there's enough RAM (and there will never be, unless someone owns a PC with at least 16GBs of RAM ).
