Ok, here is an interesting question for people that I couldn't find a thread for (if it exists, I apologize). Music is such an intricate part of gameplay. It can set a mood for a scene and make you keep interest during gameplay. My question for those out there is the following. From whatever game, what is a memorable piece of music from that game that sticks in your mind and why (if you can answer why)? I'm hoping for some creative responses here. Like I said, you can choose whatever piece of music from whatever game but I'm hoping for responses more creative than "World 1-1 from SMB!!!". I'll start with a short list.

Puzzle Plank Galaxy Theme from Super Mario Galaxy 2:
This theme is pretty memorable to me just because of how upbeat it feels. It feels bright, happy and cheery like the galaxy it plays for. That isn't to say it is the best theme in the game. There are a ton of good themes in SMG2 and this is only one of them. This one has just been stuck in my head as of late so I might as well mention it.

Ambidexterity from Virtue's Last Reward:
Man, where do I begin with this theme? One of the many things that this game nails beautifully is making you feel like shit when you make a wrong choice (and sometimes even the right choice). To keep it simple for those who don't know, this music always plays when you are in the Prisoner's Dilemma portion of the game where you have to ally or betray another character. Simply put, if a character is betrayed enough times, they die. This rule also applies to the character you are playing as. So while you are thinking of whether or not to screw over some character or whether or not they will screw you over, this music ominously plays in the background... as if to say you are screwed no matter how you choose. Very memorable in my opinion.

Suitor Attacks from Amnesia- Justine:
I have got to say, I'm not really a fan of Amnesia. I just didn't care at all for the plot of the story. The only thing I give Amnesia credit for is being terrifying and it does that VERY well. Surprisingly, I thought that this small expansion for the game was better than the actual game. I just felt the story was easier to get into. This piece of music is crazy intense by itself. The fact that it plays when you are getting chased by suitors makes the game ridiculously intense, especially when saving the third hostage. Its like, no matter how quickly you try to move, you feel like you aren't moving fast enough.

That's my list for now but what is a memorable piece of gaming music to you and why?

A recent one for me, which can be seen as a somewhat joke answer.

Sengoku Rance - The Terribler : so you're there, playing this, uh, questionable game (eroge) but then you get to the end of a dungeon.

And then you notice, "I'm actually having a pretty great boss battle with a good theme. In a freaking eroge. Holy shit." It helps that the game is not easy.

Full stop. The final boss has this awesome music, but remember not to stay there for too long, which is kind of bad.

>>ESTABLISHING LINK...DONE.    >>FETCHING POST DATA...DONE.    >>EXECUTING POSTDISP.BIN...

Two slightly more oddball choices and a much less creative one:

Pokemon Gold/Silver - Continue: One of the tracks that got shafted in HG/SS, the track that played on the New Game/Continue menu in the original games is technically just a short, looping tune... However, to me it always felt like some kind of prelude to my adventure in Johto - the "world of Pokemon" is about to come alive, with you as the trainer on his way to being the next champion.

Etrian Odyssey - Battle: Destruction Begets Decay: As much as I love, say, Battle: Initial Strike or any of the other battle or stratum themes, this one's gotten to me in a way I can't seem to describe. The theme, combined with the bleak atmosphere of the 4th stratum... It might be a bit like "the road up to this point has been long, and you've still got a long way to go... but you'll just keep fighting through, no matter how bleak things might look". No idea if that's been the intention, but that's what it feels like for me personally.

Metroid Prime - Main Menu: I don't even know what to say about this one. It's simply... awesome. Despite other awesome tracks in the game, like Phendrana Drifts (goosebumps, not just because of the virtual cold there!), this takes the cake. It's very ominous and sets the tone of the game really well, I think, with the chanting, the crackling static...

I'm limiting myself to one song per game, otherwise this list would get wayy too long:

Obligatory Chemical Plant Zone: Nothing like a well-paced, multi-layered audio piece as you zoom through the fastest stages in the classic series. ChemPlant used to be as far as I could get, due to the Shaft and the boss, but this song would stay in my head long after leaving the game in frustration.

Shining Force - Destroyed Hometown: Gah, picking just one song from ShF is difficult, so I decided upon this one. In this part in the story, you return to your kingdom after successfully rescuing a neighbouring kingdom from evil invaders, just to discover that while you were away they razed your hometown. A rather sad tune, one that conveys the mood very well.

LEGO Stunt Rally (GBC) - Victory Theme: On the other end of the mood spectrum, my second favourite handheld tune is a triumphant one! In my opinion a little-known gem, for the longest time I couldn't even find this on the internet! ...and it's another childhood favourite~

Sonic & Knux - Flying Battery Zones: I absolutely love tunes that make me want to move, and this pair of tracks are the first that come to mind in that regard. I'm certainly a large sonic fan, and when these groovy tunes are playing while you're taking down a flying battleship... it's gonna be memorable to me :3

Star Fox - Fortuna: Speaking of groovy, this is probably the least overcited great SNES track I know. Third favourite song from my second favourite series...

GHOULS'N GHOSTS (Gen/MD/Arcade) - Village of Decay/Town of Fire: The second stage is indeed the hardest in the game. BOUNCING KILLER TURTLES with semi-random spawns... Anywho, this sort of jolly seafaring-esque melody is in my opinion the second most memorable in the game, after the theme/first stage music. And I think I like this track more, I certainly have heard it more.

Mata Nui Online Game - Scuffle in the Hive/Onua VS Lewa: MNOG's entire soundtrack has fantastic atmosphere, with different directions for the music in each region of the island... I decided on this one, since it's to my favourite cutscene in the game. This particular track borrows from "The Bionicle Music" released as a part of the PowerPack set, and gets reused in the final battle cutscene. It's rockin', so I can't complain.

Halo 2 - In Amber Clad: This track plays when you set foot on the second Halo structure, full of Forerunner ruins to be explored and Covenant to be whupped. A great song to have for doin' both. :3 Seems most people think of sniping Jackals when they hear this one...

Mata Nui Online Game - Journey's End: I know i'm breaking my rule, but this song is... majestic! Ties together some of the other themes from the game, while sounding a bit resolute and celebratory. To be honest, before I looked up the soundtrack, I'd had heard only the first fifteen or so seconds... I was missing out on the main loop!

New Bark town applies even more so in both cases. It's one of the most iconic songs in G/S and certainly set the tone... only for the whole song to get butchered to death in the remakes.

I could go on forever listing memorable music in games if I wanted too...
But I'm simply to lazy to list many and I can't only list a few either!

So many good themes here !! Its fun to listen to them while reading what the poster has to say about them.

@Aerakin
Whether half joke or not, I think that this theme is pretty good. Its funny because near the end of the YT clip, the music seems to be building up to something epic and then it cuts off. I'm guessing that the theme loops again from there.

@Kak64
Oh man. That song is super nostalgic for me. DKC was the first video game I ever played.

@xdaniel
The Pokemon theme is also nostalgic for me as well. I had both Gold and Silver although Gold was my main game. Along with that I had a GBC, GBA and a link cable. I poured so much time trying to catch them all after the main game was completed. It sucks that the battery on those old games are dead now. All that time for nothing. Last time I checked(say the past year), I actually still had my Yellow and Blue saves from long ago. My Red version has had weird errors when starting it up that can wipe the save. Oh well.

@2Tie
So many at once! I love it . Even though I have barely played any Sonic games, I really do like the music in the old Genesis games. They are so... Genesisy.

@Lunaria
Its funny because I agree with you. It is really hard to only list a few pieces of music from just a few games. Speaking of which, lets keep the list rolling!!

Mystic Cave Zone from Sonic 2:
Since we were on the topic, here is one of my favorite Sonic themes. Like I said, I have barely played any Sonic games so I can't say much about them. That isn't to say that I dislike them. Its just that I've always been geared more towards Nintendo games. It is pretty fun to rush through levels as quick as you can. Watching speedruns (TAS or not) of Sonic games is pretty fun actually. This theme is, however, so kickass. I don't know why.

Red Velvet from Katawa Shoujo:
Welp since eroge was mentioned earlier, I might as well put this tune in here. This is such a good jazzy piece and is so memorable on its own. This theme plays in a few spots in the game which is usually when the main character is going out with whatever love interest. I've gotta say, despite that this is an eroge game, its not a cheap thrill. All of it is actually pretty well written. Just my opinion, but for those interested, the Lilly arc is probably the best of all of them. No spoilers but the ending is the most depressing and best ending out of all of it. If you don't shed at least one tear, you aren't human.

Quietus from 999:
Oh man, this theme. It plays when you get a game over for any of the bad endings. In most of those cases, the main character is killed off in some nasty/creepy way and it leaves you with more questions than answers. For example, "Why was the main character chosen to play in the Nonary Game?", "Whose behind the Nonary Game?" and "How will the characters get out of the game?". It makes you want to keep playing, not only to get all questions answered but to avoid facing the same fate the main character just received. So good.

Speaking of Pokemon games, they almost always have an amazing credits themes which stick in my head as exceptionally memorable. Generation 1, Generation 2 and Generation 5 (B/W1, at least) all end with pretty inspiring and excellently composed music.

This is kind of a no-brainer but Cave Story's Title / Plantation theme is also pretty much ingrained in my head. Others would probably tell you Moonsong is more memorable but the song itself is a bit uninteresting, it's mostly the atmosphere of that part of the game which makes Moonsong so recognized. Pretty amazing to think that Pixel had almost no musical knowledge before-hand when composing CS's soundtrack.

One time, I wrote a really, really lengthy post dissecting the ending to Yoshi’s Story, explaining why I felt it was actually a really good song even though a lot of people find it annoying. I went on about how it used all these diminished chords in its chord progression to create a sound that was both sunny and bittersweet with a nice dose of nostalgia, like the way you feel lounging on the beach the last few lazy days before school starts up again, reminiscing or whatever. I probably won’t be recreating the post here, but this song still really speaks to me.

I think the best part is the chorus when it just alternates between major and borrowed minor chords and the Yoshis sing so endearingly. Below is a bossa nova-esque cover of the song I found on YouTube.

<object width="560" height="315"><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/lq9hcxp-Jns?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Another sweet tune is the main theme to Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, another piece by Kazumi Totaka, which has this sort of glamour of American folk or parlor music, which provides an interesting contrast to Koji Kondo’s affinity for samba and jazz. It’s catchy and got some rad harmonies.

<object width="420" height="315"><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/5slry9Mk_jw?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

I think I just love Kazumi Totaka, though.

Well, at least New Bark Town still exists in HG/SS... the continue menu is sadly silent. But regardless, several songs were kind of butchered in HG/SS, the Pokemon Gym theme is another one of those - I think it sounds less impressive, less striking in the remakes. It's also another favorite of mine too, come to think of it, even moreso than the actual Gym Leader battle theme.

Yeah, I know the feeling. Silver was my main game and that battery died on me two or so years ago. Some Pokemon on there I had for 10 years - like Snorlax Lv100, migrated from Yellow - and then all of sudden, poof, they're gone. Generation 1 games will probably hold up a lot longer, considering how they don't have a clock to run - my copy of Yellow still loads and saves fine, along with some even older games I have, like Zelda: Link's Awakening.

And tangentially related to Pokemon, because parts of the song were remixed in Pokemon DP's soundtrack: Pulseman - Neo Tokyo: The first stage theme, and thus another theme of the iconic sort, of Game Freak's sci-fi/virtuality-themed Mega Drive platformer. Again not sure what to write about this, other than that it's a very memorable theme that kinda gets me pumped for the game.

Heh.

The first post I did on this thread didn't do justice on how much I have to say here. That was basically "The best", but in details...

Most of the tracks from Mega Man The Wily Wars - I don't care about people complaining they don't sound exactly like the originals, they're good anyway. The remix of second game's music is good enough, but the third is just awesome. This,this,this, and especially THIS. The sound driver used in that game is wierd.

Almost every track from any Donkey Kong Country/Donkey Kong Land game counts.

Crash Bandicoot 2 - Cortex Boss - Appropriately remix of the first game's theme. Do I even need to say anything?

Unused (Brave) from Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine - Whatever happened to the sound driver from the way to Puyo Puyo to Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine did good to this song, while destroying another one due to being probably a test song.

DuckTales 2 GB Glomgold's Ship - A break from the previous theme (which happens to be the "calm" sewers theme to get the best track from the game. It's one of those to sound better on the Game Boy rather than the NES version.

---EXTRA SECTION---

Puyo Puyo 2 Area B. The audio quality from Youtube doesn't do justice to this song. Also good the different theme from the SNES version.

Pocket Puyo Puyo 2 Area A - After a slow/lag-ridden disaster of the first game's GB version we get this. Also, harder difficulty even if it's the first level. Woo hoo! The music from the sequel is even better.

Pocket Puyo Puyo 3 ??? - Memory on this isn't that good, but it reminds me Mega Man music theme A LOT.

Pocket Puyo Puyo 3 Area 1 - It almost looks like high quality music (how this track's done helps). This happy theme sets the mood of the game.

Speaking of Totaka, his first Nintendo soundtrack is spectacular, really accents the gameplay and made this game really stand out for me. I love X, and the game series that lead programmer Dylan Cuthbert went on to make (Star Fox), building on the wireframe 3D engine used in this 1992 GB game. Plus, it has Totaka's Song, and Tunnel Scene (which was remixed in Brawl and in the 2010 DSiware sequel, X-Scape/X-Returns/3D Space Tank).

Speaking of GB Tunnels, The Metroid II track is great as well. In case you're unfamiliar with the game, this track plays in the overworld and in the main tunnels between the sub-areas. Quite an adventurous track too.

Oh, and the radio chatter in LEGO Island brings a little more life to another childhood favorite. :3

What did you guys think of the GB Sounds stuff in HG/SS created specifically for new tracks? I liked them quite a bit and I thought they fit well.

To be honest, m64m, I hadn't played GSC before HG/SS, and while overall I preferred the GB Sounds, I felt the entire Kanto soundtrack was... slow? Calmer? I had preferred the more lively, background-melody-all-over-the-place tracks of RGBY, and was mildly dissappointed... Still liked the Johto music, though.

For me, Song of Storms in Ocarina of Time sticks out (yeah, I know, big surprise, right?). To this day, I have no idea why I love it so much.

Shifting to my other favourite series, Sanctuary Fortress from Prime 2 is great. Prime definitely had the better soundtrack, but I could listen to Sanctuary Fortress all day.

And speaking of the prequel, Phendrana Drifts and Downed Frigate Orpheon are amazing, with DFO winning, considering that when I actually got there, I had to take a minute and just look around. Greatest sensation.

Oh god that song.

It's easy to overlook things when there are way too many games to remember (and the lazyness factor doesn't help ).

Fair enough. I grew up on Silver, so I never really noticed there was a big difference in tone for the Kanto tracks. You're right though, the originals are definitely more lively.

I don't know what it is but there is always so much nostalgia to this game for me whether it be from the music, sounds or whatnot.

But anyway, I'm not letting this thread die that easily! Its turning into a cool collage of experiences ! The next song I am placing here is definitely not the most creative but I made the rules myself to break the rules myself! I think it is deserving enough:

The Great Sea from The Wind Waker:
I love this overworld theme. It has adventure written all over it and makes the ocean feel vast. Where is my next destination? Ooooo what is on this random uncharted island? I just love the sense of exploration and this theme conveys that to me.

I was playing through Smash Bros Brawl again, and found this great track.

It's from an impressive looking Game Boy game called X. Here's part of the original track and a look at the gameplay.
