This has only started recently. I first noticed it around the time I came home for Thanksgiving. Basically, the Extraction Wizard takes extremely long (almost five minutes) to extract a .zip just over 1 MB, when before, it could unzip massive folders almost instantly. Interestingly, the download window seems to have been affected, too, as once a download finishes, the window stays open for almost a full minute longer, almost as if it has frozen, labeled as 99%, while the file sits clearly in its destination.

As I'm not home most of the time (this month being the exception), my brother is the only one with access to the computer, and I'm sure this is his doing, whether he means it or not. His earlier antics have caused Windows to no longer associate .zip files as compressed [zipped] Folders (had to change it back, no longer causes errors, but still not normal) and the near-destruction of the computer caused my amassing no less than four trojans simultaneously (fixed thanks to AVG and Derrike G.). However, this time, AVG has failed to find any viruses, so I'm unsure what to think.

So, can you help me? D:

Extraction Wizard has always been known to be pretty damn slow. Switch to WinRAR

I have WinRAR. And I have never known Extraction Wizard to ever be this slow.

Edit: Plus, it works fine on my laptop.

I've always found Extraction Wizard to be slow and unreliable. I remember trying to extract an unbuntu installation at school and it at first woudn't do it at all, and then when I finally got it to start extracting, it went so slow that by the time I downloaded and installed WinRAR, I was able to extract it with WinRAR before Extraction Wizard was done with it.

One of the computers at work had a similar problem (any download took 3 minutes to finish) ... I think I fixed it by disabling the Norton Antivirus that came installed AVG shouldn't cause this, but it could be something similar ...

And yeah, WinRAR just does it so much better than Windows's built-in .zip extractor

I don't know why I put this here.
Extractiwhat Wizard? Switch to Winrar. Your unwasted time will thank you.

...Or just fix possible Norton Antivirus meddling which may be slowing it down. Either way.

(Norton is probably the worst piece of software that's not spyware I have encountered)

7zip > WinRAR. Also, get Autoruns and look for shell extensions that might be slowing things down. Then switch to Firefox or Opera.

7zip is awesome. Right click archive -> Extract to (folder) is quite a bit faster than clicking through the three screens of the extraction wizard.

I prefer WinRAR for general-purpose shenanigans, just because 7Z doesn't have most features yet (like archive testing) and I generally find WinRAR does a better job.

7z is good at compressing redundant data, and that is all I will say.

Isn't that the whole point of compression?

Yes, but I mean extremely good. With things like executables and PNGs, WinRAR and 7z are basically equal (although 7z takes a year and a half). When I crunched 2 months of SQL backups, the resulting file took about 40 minutes to make but crunched it from 700MB to a little over 5.4MB.

That's insane.
So 7z is better for text files while .rar is better for programs and images (due to speed), basically?

That would be my experience, yes.

I don't know why I put this here.
All kinds of weird stuff winds up in this forum. It must be people confusing 'Forum help' with 'Help for EVERYTHING'. Although all topics in here wind up getting replied to, so in the long run it seems harmless.
