Awhile ago on YouTube, a user named Abystus had posted a video showing a hidden developer edit menu in X-Men: COTA. It can't be accessed by normal means, unless you use this cheat in MAME:

http://www.mamecheat.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9026

And here is the video he posted:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te6Urzo4JA4

I noticed there were a few unused sprites and an unused ending image.

Painting of the X-Men at 2:26

Professor X talking and pointing at 3:25

Colossus painting at 3:30, and his painter's beret at 3:34

Mojo falling onto his back at 5:36

Aside from the unused sprites shown, there's also object and ending viewers and its possible there might be other things undiscovered using the debug edit menu.

Oh, it's that guy. He's posted some stuff here on the forum, but then he sorta vanished.

I added the cheat to my MAME cheat docs and I can rip the unused sprites later. I've got the Mojo sprites and the pointing professor captured already.

I'm looking through some of the other sprites in there right now to see if I notice anything really out of the ordinary unused.

I'm always around, I just have limited time due to me having to watch my son. Also, games with huge menus like that take time to document (have a few on my channel I need to get to), so I normally don't have the time. I would appreciate a source or discovery mark for my name if possible from whoever makes a page out of the debug menu (it's really the only reason I take time to make my own pages normally, and also why I continue to look for this stuff in general.) Glad everyone enjoyed the hack, I'm sure I'll find more in the future.

I certainly wouldn't mind giving you a hand trying to document stuff in the menus for you if you want, Abystus. If you got anything written down, feel free to give me what you got and I'll try to tinker with it too and see if I got anything you missed or something.

I gotta get off my ass and do something anyway.

Well I currently don't have anything written up, just the video atm (your welcome to use it on the page if you want). In addition to this game's debug mode, I also have another huge one for Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon. I really need to make some free time to get this all up on the site eventually, along with several other things I've found for which I don't have videos for :/.

Other stuff not in a video? Oho! Like what?

Also, have a few screenshots of unused sprites because it's too late at night for me to rip them properly.

Professor X pointing. (Go and save the city...?!)

One frame of Colossus Painting (happy trees!)

Mojo HYPER COMBO FINISHED!!!

I got the painting but it's in two screenshots which very badly need combining. I'll do that tomorrow if I get a moment.

Here's something I discovered, possibly.

Juggernaut carrying something. This is actually two separate sprites, one of Juggernaut without the right arm, and the other of his right arm carrying something. This is an extremely rough mockup that I wouldn't post on the wiki.

While he does have the ability to pick up steel beams here, I haven't noticed anything in the way of him being able to pick up crates or random objects off the ground like this.

If this is true, this is unused here, but used in Marvel Super Heroes.

It seems like if he's close enough he will pick up the downed opponent and carry them off. This isn't from that is it?

Are you talking about his win pose or an actual attack?

If it's the win pose, that's a completely different sprite he uses.

Great to see more Capcom fighter developer menus and unused sprites. Hopefully we can get a COTA page set up on the wiki.

I was on X-Cult a few weeks ago and noticed this page on X-Men: COTA. In the first revision (The Japanese version, Ver. 1.00) of the game, there's a female acolyte that appears when Magneto is beaten, but for some reason, she goes completely unused in all the other later revisions. Not even the Sega Saturn and PlayStation versions, as far as I know.

Also there's a blue aura that appears on Magneto's hand that doesn't appear in any other revision also, not to mention a minor placement of the dialogue box during Avalon's explosion, and a different win quote for Magneto if he wins with a perfect. (It should be "Magneto is supreme", but the page says "Magneto is scream", which makes no sense).

Link to the page: http://www.x-cult.org/wiki/games/154/X-Men:_Children_of_the_Atom/4354/Version_1.00_differences/

Also, there was a Japanese Store Demo for the Saturn version that was released before the retail one, which was based off the arcade beta (Ver 3.00). Here's a link showing some differences between the beta/store demo and the final retail version, but I don't know if there's anymore than what's shown on here:

http://www.segagagadomain.com/saturn19/xmen-samp.htm

I also found the store demo can be downloaded here too:

Makes sense to me. I could imagine someone mistaking リーム for リーム.

You're right, I had mistaken it for an actual voiceover quote, not a text quote.

Okay, is Akuma named in the hidden developer test menu? From what I saw at the end of the video, Akuma was a "Test" character while Magneto jokingly named as "Magneto Sama". Do you have any access to Hidden Dev Menu in Super Turbo? The female acolyote from the first revision was in the final (v3.00) data but it's unused due to the fact that she resists Magneto by holding his crotch. You wanna see that first version, you'll know what I mean.

Also, if you play as Magneto via cheat and you win the match via perfect, you will hear this quote rather than just the final, "You are beaten!".

Unfortunately, it looks like the developer menus no longer exist in Super Turbo, although the text for them does. There's one routine that loads all test menu texts from one big index that includes text for both menus that actually are accessible in the finished game (for game settings, sound test and such) as well as developer ones. However, I haven't found any branches to this routine that would seem to load any of the developer menu texts, so I assume they've been removed. If anyone can prove me wrong and dig up these developer menus though, I'd be extremely grateful.

Anyway, Akuma is never mentioned by name in Super Turbo, either in any of the playable game or in any of the leftover developer text. Back then he was only referred to by name in supplemental materials (books, magazines, etc.) The developer menus that actually accessible in the older SF2s never mention any of the characters by name either.

As an interesting aside, the second Darkstalkers game also has leftover developer menu text, but rather than referring to the characters by name it simply refers to them as "Vampire", "Zombie", "Werewolf", "Mummy", etc. Presumably they didn't come up with the characters' names until late in the process.

Hmm... are there any more debug leftovers here? Like, leftovers overlooked or hidden in the code.

After I went through the test menu and I found a female acolyte from the first version of the game, there's only one question left remain, is there any other way around to find Akuma's sprite and animation other than just looking through Kawaks' tile viewer? I looked around and it's all X-Men characters done for the whole game, I know that his win quotes were there in the dev menu because I believe that Akuma was just a test subject during development of the game (just like Anita from MSH) before Capcom made a first X-Men character, but this game was made after the release of Super Turbo hence his sprite was from his game itself which had a completely different contour from the rest of the characters in this game.

That female acolyte is supposed to be Anne-Marie Cortez?! And the guy with the wings is Exodus... and the big guy is Delgado. Huh. Weird how they included them and not Fabian Cortez...

What's interesting about using the Hidden Dev Menu of this game is the fact that they used the CPS1 Street Fighter font which is totally unused in this game. Maybe this was modified from Street Fighter II's debug or something?
