Somerville Worries It’s Growing Too Hip

I feel like there’s this trend that once a city amasses enough “hip” twenty-somethings, the local newspaper publishes an article about how “cool” it is. Then they go on about how skinny the jeans are on the dudes that live there, how many “fashionable” hats there are, how many craft beers the bars have and how much the rent is going up.

It’s cute and by that I mean really fucking daft. If my partner read this, she’d be convinced that the newspaper is trying to attract more “hipsters” to their little gentrifying towns, which isn't unbelievable since while I read this I admit I kinda felt jealous that I didn't live in Davis Square in my few years in Boston, but I already felt that way before I read this article.

I'm sure a number of you chill in “growing ’hoods”. I’ve lived almost exclusively in cities that have been identified as the “hippest cities in America”, so this is nothing new to me. In fact, I used to think articles like this were “amusing” but now they’re getting “tired” because they’re all from the same mold. Has your town been noted for its boutiques by the local newspapers yet?

Heh.

Living in the liberal hotbed that is the Pacific Northwest, this kind of hipster self-awareness is nothing new. I can't say that my own town - which is relatively small and rural - has taken to the trend yet, but pretty much every city around it has. My town directly borders Vancouver, Washington, which oozes hipster out of its coffee shops and organic start-ups. And the local media has taken notice, of course: there's a handful of independent papers cycling that talk all about it, and the city government has no doubt taken measures to make hipsters feel "welcome."

And then there's the beast of Portland, which practically invented the whole "hip" labeling. Local news has at least half of its stories talking about the breweries and the local concerts and the indie projects and films to the vein of "Portlandia," etc. Then there's the whole "Keep Portland Weird" phrase... suffice to say, I'm not foreign to hipsterdom.

I live in Seattle itself which is probably the liberal-est of the liberal hotbeds in the PNW. I lived in Portland for about a month before I settled up here, so it's nothing new to me.

Gosh, you're only 15, huh? You probably didn't really know Portland back when the Pearl district wasn't so nice and SE Division was not yet “cool”. But neither did I.

Man, I can't imagine living in any of the small towns near Vancouver, WA. Vancouver is “hip” now? What!?

A lot of this is happening in San Francisco as far as I'm aware but mostly in the Mission. You can probably find a million articles about how "hip" the Mission is. What's really fun, though, is finding articles that talk about Oakland.

Maybe. But seriously, you're in Orange county and you're near LA. I kinda doubt seeing an article like this happening in Irvine, though, since apparently it's the seventh richest city in the US for a population over 65,000 and they mostly write articles like this for former working class neighborhoods being taken over by cool kids.

I live not very far from Williamsburg in Brooklyn. I have only heard horrible things, about uncontrolled beards threatening to blot out the sun and bike lanes that take up more street space than car lanes. "Literally every bad Hipster stereotype, all in one concentrated area," I believe was the phrase that followed.

I was also told about Barcade, which is exactly what it sounds like and something I wish to experience, so I might just have to brave it.

Ha, something like this would be just impossible in my town, or in the big area all around it. Among other things, there are bandwagons of old people here (which is somewhat common in Italy and it's quite a problem), and I'm not even exaggerating.
It's also very quiet, apart from the occasional music concerts in summer (and said old people are not very happy of this ).

I live far away from something even remotely similar to a hipster city, so I really can't know what it's like to live in one.

Oh well. Things sure are different in other countries...

Kak64, I'd imagine they live in Rome or Florence, but I don't really know much about Italy's modern-day culture. It seems to be a thing in Paris, London and even Amsterdam, though.

Kak64, I'd imagine they live in Rome or Florence, but I don't really know much about Italy's modern-day culture. It seems to be a thing in Paris, London and even Amsterdam, though.


To be fair, Sofi, neither I do.

I didn't even think of hipster city existing... the reason is that tt's not very common here (or at least where I live), and I don't travel a lot.

I have only ever been in these regions.
The last one is where I usually go on holiday (and it's the only one of the bunch I know well enough to give an opinion ).

I should probably travel much more...
