So, being a full-time student at my university, in a Software Engineering major, and currently in a tech class (C++), the faculty provided me with a Premium Microsoft DreamSpark account, for free! They enroll all of their tech students with one. (Hey, tuition is $16k; students deserve the biggest bang for our buck$.)

What is DreamSpark? Basically a depository where enrolled students/faculty can download past and present major Microsoft Products, such as the XNA Framwork, Microsoft Office, OSes, Visual Stuido and much more. Due to the account being Premium, all downloads are free! Yes, they all cost $0.00 .

Taking advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime golden opportunity, I am considering upgrading my HP ProBook 4540s, with Windows 7 x64 Home Premium SP1, to W7Pro-x64. However, from what I read on the internet and from one of the MSDN Tech articles, the "official" route to upgrade from W7HP to W7Pro will require a clean install, meaning that I will lose all settings, and possibly even installed applications and data . Does anyone know of a hack/workaround from this? Is what I read true? Is it even worth the upgrade & risk? It doesn't seem like Pro adds any featuresthat I really need.

-Thanks in advance!

If you are upgrading from x86 to x64, you have to reinstall. x86 to x86 upgrades OR x64 to x64 upgrades do not, from what I have seen. It depends on what kind of installer you are using too; an OEM install disk can't do upgrade installs, for example.

I'm upgrading from x64 to x64, so I am fine there. The installation method appears to be with a literally installation file (.msi or .exe installer, I think), but it does come with a Product Key. I'm post more information in an hour or two...

An online installer like that is going to be specifically for upgrading an installation, and not for a fresh install.

You're good.

After 10 attempts at downloading it, I finally got the install to download. (The CRC kept failing on the WiFi connection; worked on landline connection.) However, the download is an ISO DVD image. Will this still work?

However, from what I read on the internet...

I re-found that article I read on the internet; see the picture below. It was on the DreamSpark page.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Assuming that "Windows 7 Home" is really refering "Windows Home Premium", it looks like I would have to do a clean install . However, I typed the product key that came with the digital ISO Disc into the "Windows Anytime Upgrade" program and I got the following:

iCan haz W1nd0es 7 Prou?

Just to double check with someone who has done this before, this will not delete settings/gobble up the data on my current W7HP partition, correct? This is primarily a college/software dev laptop, and I really do not want to lose stuff... Any warnings/recommendations before pressing that big, shiny, Upgrade button?

Based on those two images... I would back up anything important just to be sure.

OH YEAH!

It upgraded to Windows 7 Professional, sucessfully! And all it took was 10 minutes, and a whole day of backing up data to 8 DVD-RWs. (Now I have my bi-monthly backups done too.)

Thanks

Or a USB external hard drive. I have automated backups to mine. Don't even have to think about it.

Eww! A tape drive.

(Funny how you mentioned about a tape drive, considering that I just recently wrote a small report about the tape drive's history for my Intro to Engineering Class at the University. Topic was to write about an important technology that was groundbreaking and was invented before 1975. Quite amazing that tape drives with up to 35TB capacity are in the works!)

Meh. I'm a poor university student, and both a external HDD and (especially) a Tape Drive are too expensive for me right now. DVD-RWs are much cheaper. I usually only backup and compress manually my data using 7Zip into 4765M blocks on Ultra compression. The only data I backup is the essentials: everything underneath my user folder, and my university flashdrive. Never applications; I figure I can redownload those if I lose data. (98% of my programs are freeware, and those that aren't, such as Visual Studio and AutoCAD 2014 Student edition, are already backupped )

You could try CrashPlan, which is supported on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, by virtue of the client software being Java based. The free version can do local backups or backups to a friend over the local or remote network running their own copy of the client, and for a minimal fee, it can also back up to their remote servers. All backups perform de-duplication, and also supports differential updates, so it only backs up what has changed since the last backup. And new accounts come with a free month of the unlimited CrashPlan+ service, so you get a month to basically upload your data to The Butt, after which you must start paying a monthly or yearly or so fee. It gets cheaper the more you pay for at once. They also have somewhat more expensive family plans which support backing up between two and ten machines, or business plans if you really need more than that.

I have had occasion to use my up to date local backup to restore files which were mis-edited, but hopefully I never need to use the remote backup.
