Greetings, I've been looking through the wiki and have not seen some of the things I've discovered since I started hacking games.

So let me start with JESUS for the NES. You're missing a password that brings you to the end of the game. It literally translates to To Ms. Emi Haimoto: Will you be Mr. Toku’s bride?

はいもとの えみさんへ とくさんの よめにこい

Also this mashes a bunch of song titles from the soundtrack together.

さりゆくも のたちきら めくひとみ そらのはて

This translates to Young Motsu played {keyboard} since he was young

もつくんは わかままて れいさろん ひきたかる

Twinbee 3.

There are alternate endings in the game. There's one normal credits section for the easy difficulty and a joke credits for the hard difficulty. Furthermore, there is more hidden text after the credits. Based on a variable in RAM, the picks alternate ending messages other than CONGRATULATIONS. Stuff like OH MY GOD, ARE YOU OK etc.

Pariodius Da!

There are several hidden stages in the game.

Stage 1: Equip a weapon that doesn't fire straight...
(Like the RIPPLE or DOUBLE weapon) and fire at the
ceiling just past the first pirate ship. The ceiling
will break open and you can go up into the sky stage.
Start shooting early, because if you break it open
too late, the screen won't pan up, and you can't enter
the stage.

Stage 3: When the roller coaster takes a downward
turn, there's a wall that seals shut at the top of
the screen. Blow the wall open, and continue to the
right before the screen pans down. If it pans to the
right, you're in the new stage. If it doesn't, you're
dead. (Be prepared to die many times before you get
into this stage.)

Stage 5: Blow the mouth apart at the front of the
spaceship, and then enter the mouth.

Stage 6: The second time you enter the water, you'll
see a black square with sparkles. Touch it to enter
the last extra stage.

Have these already been documented elsewhere, or were you the first to find them? We typically don't document things like secret passwords and levels unless nobody else has found them yet, they're unused, or they are related to debugging functions.

To my knowledge, no. You already list the passwords in Jesus, so I figure someone can add the fifth one in. Also there are unused graphics in Parodius. I know there is one unused the end graphic in Japanese.

But here's one that can be documented. Castle Quest for the NES. There are several names that trigger hidden content, including a secret message and sound editor mode. Also if you don't pick a default name, the game names you after an obscenity.

Zankennayo could be an obscenity. You can translate it as is either "Don't mess with me" or "Don't fuck with me" or "Stop playing around", that sort of thing.

It seems to me like the degree of obscenity would just depend on the translator's angst (as happens in a number of fan translations).

I'd try asking a native Japanese for the most common meaning and the true degree of rudeness that this word might carry with it, before assuming things.

EDICT marks it as obscene, though I've heard the term before somewhere so let's not assume things (for all we know it could just be mild).

Eh, I can probably ask somebody (I have quite a large amount of people to who I could ask).

No idea how obscene would that qualify, but at least shows the use of the phrase (seems to be just a general swear).

Wait what? How do I trigger that? Is it random?

According to that reply you got, the severity depends on the situation. (Japanese is a really vague language sometimes. )

I've only ever heard/seen it used in a specific context, though.

I don't think we're going to get a clear answer unless we ask about the game specifically.

He's just saying it depends on whether you're in a casual situation (e.g. with friends) or in a formal situation (e.g. you wouldn't shout out swears when talking to a store clerk or a business partner, right?). Pretty much what happens in Western cultures, really.

tl;dr just a generic swear. No biggie.

EDIT: assuming you're talking about the second reply I got in Twitter and not the first reply (the one I quoted here), since he uses that word you linked in the second reply.

...There wasn't a second reply when I posted.

I agree with your interpretation; it's not polite language. I don't think it's quite the severity that the fan translation chose, but eh.

OK so that was pure coincidence XD (then again I came post as soon as I got that second reply, which is the one that clarified the usage)

Yep, pretty much exactly this. It seems to be more like when one shouts out "shit" when something goes wrong or stuff like that. The fact it's short (especially when you remove the particles) probably should have given it away, but some people don't get it...

Pretty much the answer I got, it's not nice, but nothing overly bad.

I didn't expect this thread to turn into a debate on the translation of an insignificant piece of text :/

Anyway, Twinbee, this piece of code triggers the different ending text.
CMP #$07

BCC $B0E7
LDA $007F = #$01
CMP #$0B
BEQ $B0F1
LDA $007F = #$01
CMP #$13
BEQ $B0F1
BCC $B0EC
LDA $007F = #$01
CMP #$26
BEQ $B0F1
LDA $007F = #$01
CMP #$3A
BEQ $B0F1
LDA $007F = #$01
CMP #$6C
BEQ $B0E2
#$7F is the variable, but I'm not sure what it is exactly. The only thing I can say for sure is by picking the hard difficulty 7F becomes $07. This extra ending text might not even normally be triggered in the game as far I can tell.

Here's a good one. Metal Slader Glory has a debug mode accessed by password.
