Regarding the lack of folding:

http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/ChristianNutt/20130829/199259/Whats_so_confusing_about_the_Nintendo_2DS.php

As for the fact it doesn't fold anymore, the last time I checked (and I'm not a parent, so feel free to call me on this one) kids didn't really shove stuff in pockets so much as carry it around with them in bags or cases. As far as I recall, too, Nintendo had plenty of success with and few complaints about non-folding portable systems from 1989 - 2003.

Comparing it to the original Game Boy honestly is kind of dumb (the Game Boy wasn't large in both dimensions), but I guess the point that kids would never fold the system in the first place stands. I still wonder how it fares from an usability standpoint though (it may be clusmy to use simply out of sheer size, which could be an issue for somebody with small hands as is the case with kids).

The thing needs some sort of a protective cover for the screens so kids can lug it around in a backpack without them damaging it.

I have no real issue with the thing except for the size of the screens (they should've been a bit larger) and... some games may be incompatible. Don't some games -require- you to close the screen or somesuch?

Yup. Trace Memory is one that comes to mind but based on some rudimentary Googling, it seems like going to sleep mode is what triggers the event or something.

Phantom hourglass does that to with a map copying thing; The puzzle was already stupid enough as is, but now it will be downright gamebreaking.

Going to assume that flipping the sleep switch is the same as closing the lid, as otherwise things like StreetPass won't work anymore.

The sleep switch does the exact same thing as closing the screen. It isn't going to affect software compatibility.

Protective cases were announced at the same time as the system.

I'm pretty indifferent to the thing. It's always fun watching the internet collectively shit its pants in rage, though! If I didn't have a 3DS and wanted a device I'd consider it after giving it a test run to see if the form factor ended up being good or bad for me. (disclaimer: I often end up playing some games on the 1989 GB because it's my favorite form factor and I find its d-pad the best) Admittedly the lack of the second circle pad is irritating, but eh. We might see changes before release. Who knows?

I am all too familiar with this feeling (see: Google's Nexus line of devices. I ultimately figured that for my use cases, lack of expandable storage would not hinder things too much on the Nexus 7, and Android isn't stupid about letting you manage media. Nexus 4 is right the fuck out, though.)

Ultimately it's "can I put up with this one flaw?" Sometimes, yes. Sometimes, no.

The fact that the screen can't be protected is, in my opinion, a massive design flaw.

This was pretty much an innovation with the GBA SP. I don't really recall many people getting super aggravated over the previous systems. (Then again, they also were less wide... well, except the GBA's case, but it was short enough to the point where it didn't quite matter.)

Only if someone doesn't realize that closing the device puts the maps to sleep, really. Makes a lot less sense? Hell yes, but far from gamebreaking. I'm pretty sure word will spread about it.

This. In the DS closing the lid is handled just like any other button (you can retrieve its status from the joypad register - yes, it's up to the game to enter sleep...), so if the 3DS is the same this shouldn't be any issue.

It seems Nintendo did that to prevent people whining about it like if they were forced to buy it.

I think it's been a while since you used a classic GB. Those things weren't large in two dimensions, they were large in three. So much so, I think you're overestimating the 2DS' size.

Remembering a four digit code is obviously too much for parents.

Just for fun:

Width x Height x Depth

Gameboy Brick:
90 mm x 148 mm x 32 mm
3.5" x 5.8" x 1.3"

Nintendo 2DS:
144 mm x 127 mm x 20.3 mm
5.7" x 5.0" x 0.80"

If those dimensions are correct, then the 2DS really does take up less space than the original Game Boy, at least volumetrically.

Fair enough, though I wonder how many of them even know it's there before purchasing.

Honestly, if one is going to just give the 3DS to a kid and use parental controls to disable 3D, there isn't even much of a point on remembering the code. At worst you'll be stuck with 3D disabled.

I wonder how comfortable games that play sideways are (like Brain Age and Luigi battles in Dream Team [Bros.]).
