I heard Nintendo was going to make a 2DS. It's like the 3DS but cheaper and has no 3D. It seems that Nintendo's fans aren't very happy about it, though. I myself have no opinions about 2DS.

Now what's next: Wii V, which is Wii U without HD, and Nintendo 1DS.

While I'm not planning on getting a 2DS and know little about this, I assume it's going to be quite profitable and that it's a wise business move. I must admit, there have been too many DS "upgrades" or whatever you would like to call them. To say that they are not making their fans happy is a huge generalization based on one of the worst sources possible: youtube comments.

i think the 2DS is a great move

it's like an economy level 3DS
intended more for younger children

(no 3D for people under 8)

the gameboy micro was great
and this is like 3DSmicro yo

Yeah, the whole point is to get the nintendonium back, and make a brick that can last a long time while playing for kids.

Cheap? No easy to break hinge? That 3D panic gone?

Yeah, parents will eat it up.

I won't say that I am a big fan of the 2DS but I don't hate the 2DS either. I honestly only see it as a cheaper alternative to other 3DS models. Its crazy how many dislikes the video trailer for it on youtube is getting though. Its crazy how people are spitting venom at it as if they are being forced to buy it.

Yeah, I know! Just like I was forced to preorder my original 3DS for $250 and pick it up on launch day. For which I have been so excited that I have bought exactly two games, Shadow Wars on launch day and Ocarina of Time 3D when it launched. I haven't felt much like spending lods of emone on games for it, and as I hardly use it any more for more than collecting my monthly Streetpass, which I only use to collect puzzle pieces any more, it's kind of a waste. Although, if I ever do find myself in need of a lengthy distraction, it will last a lot longer for playing games than my Nexus 4 does. Although, in that case, I'd probably just bring my Nook Simple Touch (with GlowLight that I rarely use, but it's nice to have) and read instead. And that thing will last for weeks on a single charge.

I think it's the first time I see a Nintendo video having more dislikes than likes.

Acey says:

The thing with the 2DS is that the 3D function on the 3DS isn't mandatory. It can be turned off using the slider thingy on the side. So the whole "no 3D!" angle is kinda pointless, though I will concede that the concept of a cheaper system that can still play 3DS-exclusive games is kind of cool.

But more importantly, the design is unbelievably awful. One of my favorite things about the DS (and 3DS, by extension) has always been its portability, and the clamshell design meant that breaking the screen was a lot harder--in fact, my DSes and 3DS have been super durable in general, but I digress. The fact that the screen can't be protected is, in my opinion, a massive design flaw. And going back to portability...there is no way in hell you could fit this brick in your pocket. If the screen is the same size as the 3DS screen, it's gonna be huge and unwieldy

Yeah, I highly doubt Nintendo will turn much of a profit on this.

My partner and I have been discussing this since the announcement and while she is super wholeheartedly behind it and thinks it's a 100% awesome business decision, on the other hand, I believe it's, as David Lynch would say,

<object width="420" height="315"><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/exli6rGldBc?hl=en_US&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

It's hard for me to care about any system beyond the DS if even the DS. I don't know if it's because I'm getting old or the Cold War is ending or I've just simply come to crave the "authenticity" of single screens or what. But either way, I hate how this new 2DS is flat and looks something like a tablet. I mean, it basically is one, kinda. To humorously use a slippery slope fallacy, are we going to expect iPads as the next "revolutionary" Nintendo handheld gaming console?

Portability is super important to me when it comes to, um, portable electronics. That's why I champion the Micro and it's why I think the Game Boy Pocket is a way better system than the original Game Boy. I'm sure I can fit a 2DS in my purse, but I want things that'll fit in my skinny jean pockets, dammit.

Well, two things: 1) you can accidentally turn on 3D again if you aren't careful where you place your fingers (a problem with little kids) and 2) the 3D screen is still quite more expensive to manufacture than a standard 2D one, so it pays off in price for those without a system already and who don't care about the 3D feature.

That said, while I keep hearing comments about the hinge... isn't this thing quite huge without the ability to close it?

Way too much rage coming from people the system isn't even marketed to.

This isn't replacing the 3DS or XL. It's simply a third option for children and people that can't quite afford a real 3DS.

I don't think I saw nearly this much rage when the Wii Mini was released, which was a legitimately terrible $99 console with severely limited functionality (no GameCube support, no wifi or Ethernet support, one useless USB port, no SD card slot, no component or 480p support). This, on the other hand, has all the same features and software support as a real 3DS, minus the expensive and gimmicky 3D screen and clamshell design. So what's the problem?

The only problem I can see is that it completely overpowers the sales of the basic model and stores stop stocking the 3DS and 3DS XL in favor of the more profitable 2DS, which would screw over those that aren't the target audience of the 2DS.

But that's impossible to predict, so...

Because it's all the things I want (lower price and no 3D), but also without the one thing I need (good clamshell design).

It's just a little annoying to see it literally trip right on the finish line of me buying it. all the more power to those this console fits, it's just a little annoying having it be so close yet so far from what I wanted.

If I didn't already own a 3DS, I would buy this so hard.

The lack of folding is the only disadvantage to this at all, but I keep my 3DS in my bag in a case anyway.

Goddamnit Nintendo, where was this thing in the middle of last year when I wanted to get a 3DS?

Yeah, the design is the biggest flaw, IMO. It might be a nice concept if it actually folded.

This. All of this. It's a cheap, entry-level version of Nintendo's current best-selling system. It's a way to get the drug that is Monster Hunter 3U into more hands for less expense, and that is a wonderful and beautiful thing.

speaking of, I should really just make a way-late Monster Hunter thread and try to convert everyone here with a WiiU to my cause, so I can make a legion of dragon slayers to help outfit me with better gear.

That would, once again, defeat the purpose. It's for kids, so they don't break the thing.

So my boyfriend bought me a 3DS XL with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team!

I guess I shall now be joining the 3DS-owning club! And now I can get ready for Pokemon X & Y coming out soon!!

Wow. That same YouTube trailer for the 2DS now has comments and ratings disabled.
